St Moritz (CHF 0320)
This position is not currently available.

An able and experienced educator is required for a short-term assignment starting as soon as possible and ending mid-June 2020. The role involves tutoring two siblings, a girl aged 8 and a boy aged 6, in a full-time home school setting in Switzerland.

The family normally live in northern Italy but have been staying in their home in St Moritz because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Student

The oldest student is a girl aged 8. She is focused and tenacious, likes reading and math and is on par with her US age group. That said, there is room for improvement in both areas if she is to reach the standard of her British peers. She is a very accomplished Nordic skier for her age. She also likes tennis, horse-back riding and alpine skiing. She speaks English, German and Mandarin.

Like his sister, her brother, aged 6, also speaks English, German and Mandarin. He is on par with his US age group in terms of reading and math, but again he is behind compared to the British system. He struggles with writing and is receiving occupational therapy for physical control. He is tall for his age, and his muscles aren’t as developed as they should be. There are no learning or cognitive issues – it is simply a case of using the OT to help manage his physical control. He also receives speech training to help improve his lisping (mainly the pronunciation of S and TH). He loves alpine skiing and tennis.

Both children are smart but need a disciplined approach to learning. The boy especially gets easily frustrated as he is very competitive. The children are enrolled in an American school in northern Italy.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will be required to work with the children on a daily basis to ensure that they complete their schoolwork to a high standard. The children’s school is currently closed due to the health situation in the region. The school sends a worksheet every evening for the next day and has daily video calls for check-ins in the morning.

Ideally the tutor would also identify other learning opportunities and help the children become interested in them. One example would be accelerating the children's reading and math so that they don’t develop any gaps and thereby ensure they have strong foundations in place for their return to full time schooling.

The key role of the Tutor is to ensure that the children do not lose any ground during this hiatus, and in fact may benefit from this opportunity for some excellent one on one teaching to return to school having improved in both reading and mathematics. Given the efficacy of individual tuition, it is likely that the Tutor will have time to develop creative extension projects which will help to foster a love of learning in the children.

Hours and Holidays

School work is ideally from 9am-12pm, followed by a quick lunch. The family have arranged for both children to be picked up by skiing instructors at 1pm and be brought back at 4pm. When they return, the children should finish any schoolwork for that day and be ready for a 6.30pm dinner.

The Tutor will have normally have weekends and evenings off, but should expect that there may be some occasions when she or he is asked to stay late or do some baby-sitting.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

The Tutor will be staying in the family apartment with a separate bed and bathroom. There is parking so if the Tutor has a car they can drive to Switzerland (assuming border controls are not restricted due to quarantine).

The Tutor will be reimbursed for all local public transport and any travels costs incurred while travelling with the family.

The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.

The Tutor will be physically fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
