A well-qualified and experienced teacher is sought as a full time private tutor to work with an American family, living in Sunningdale, (just outside the M25). They have a 9-year-old son, in 3rd grade, following the US education system.

The boy received his early schooling in Moscow, and has had to switch from Russian to English. Because of this transition, and other problems, the boy would probably fail in a normal school and, to avoid the likely loss of confidence and self-esteem, he is being home-schooled. He has been receiving a specialist educational program and this has helped with some of his difficulties interpreting language. The boy is eager to learn, and is a delight to work with. He is a happy child with a pleasant demeanour, and only occasionally shows his frustration when he feels he is failing.

Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Education

The boy works well and will focus for as long as necessary, but he cannot always understand texts, instructions and vocabulary. His maths is weak and he requires gentle, slow repetition of ideas. Methods such as drawing pictures to associate with words help him to remember, as do rhymes and role-play. A multi-sensory approach has the best results.

The position requires a non-traditional approach where experiential learning, visits to places of interests, outdoor activities and project work will be the norm. The teacher will need to be dynamic and energetic, full of creative fun and ideas, and able to develop a curriculum that covers the requisite material outside a formal classroom setting.

The family are not really looking for an SEN teacher as such, just someone with experience of working with children who need extra support and encouragement. It is hoped that patient work, over the next year or so, will develop appropriate skills and bring the boy to the required grade to rejoin a normal school next year.

Schedule

The boy has a busy weekly schedule and his schoolwork will need to fit around his active social programme and tennis lessons. The working week will be limited to 35 hours, but these hours will be variable within the range 10am-7pm, Monday-Friday. The tutor will need to be flexible regarding these hours, and family circumstances may make them subject to change at short notice. Meals occurring during working hours will be provided.

There is an elder sister, aged 11, who will also have some of the tutor’s time, each day, to help with her homework.

Other factors

The position is being advertised as non-residential, ie. it is anticipated that the tutor will commute to and from the client’s home each day. For commuting by public transport, travel expenses will be reimbursed. If the tutor uses his own car, mileage will be claimable.

Accommodation may be possible for an exceptional candidate who cannot take up the post otherwise.

If the tutor needs to relocate to take up the position - either from abroad or from within the UK - a car will be provided for the use of the tutor. They will also be entitled to holiday travel back to their own home.

For an exceptional candidate the client is prepared to consider a ‘buy-out’ to the school or organisation that holds the applicant’s contract, to compensate for early termination to meet the client’s preferred start date. The exact details of such an arrangement will be discussed with short-listed candidates.
