Introduction
Student
He is kind-hearted and friendly, although he can be moody. He loves animals, basketball, drama, and some aspects of pop culture, in particular rap music. He is a very anxious child, often experiencing a low self-esteem, and he has a mild form of attention deficit.
His curriculum requires extensive test preparation. He routinely has 4-5 hours of homework a night. He learns best when he studies in multiple ways; for example, being held accountable both orally and on paper is vitally important to his progress. He is a capable young man when focused and motivated. He can be dreamy and disconnected at times though, and is often isolated in social situations. He would benefit from an energetic tutor who could ignite an academic passion, someone who can maintain lightness with the rigor required.
He has received the support of full time tutors from Tutors International in the past and is well used to working with this support.
The Tutoring Role
The Tutor will ensure that the student's homework is complete and correct for the due date. The Tutor should also ensure that all quizzes and tests are thoroughly prepared and the Tutor is confident that he knows the relevant material, as well as extending him to draw links between the subject areas he studies. He learns best through a combination of military drill, mnemonics and creative, fun, game-like devices. It will be up to the Tutor to devise and prepare these learning aids.
The Tutor will need to be comfortable supporting all subjects in the student's grade, and especially strong in French, Maths, and English. He is an able linguist, but he needs help in consolidating grammar rules and vocabulary on a daily basis, in order to ensure he retains all that he has learnt. He is good at recalling rules of algebra, but he sometimes struggles to apply his knowledge; he needs to be monitored in reading questions thoroughly so that he can recognize what he is being asked to calculate. The Tutor must also pay close attention to his working - once he understands what he needs to work out, he is often enthusiastic and rushes through his calculations, leading to inaccuracies. He will also benefit from someone who can help him to become more adept at writing essays based on the reading materials, and on reading comprehension. He is beginning to understand the importance of essay plans, and needs guidance to ensure he develops his analytical skills and a sound writing technique, which will stand him in good stead for more advanced essays. He is good at History, and revises best for this if the subject matter is brought to life as much as possible, such as through dramatization (asking him to act out topics), or relevant TV documentaries. His science studies are centered around what is carried out in the laboratory at school, and he is often working on class projects. The Tutor should be aware of the material taught at school, even though he has relatively little science homework.
It is hoped that he will achieve high grades in all his subjects, not only because he is capable of this, but also because it is important for his high school applications.
The young man will soon be taking ISEE standardized tests, and it is important that he be prepared thoroughly for these assessments. He should practice for these tests for at least an hour every weekend.
He has studied Latin for a year, and although he is not taking it at school, his parents would like him to continue with the subject. The Tutor is therefore expected to prepare lessons for him, which he will do either on evenings with light workloads or at the weekend. There is a possibility that he will sit a Latin GCSE within the next few years.
His father will liaise with his school to try to prevent him from misrepresenting his homework assignments to the Tutor, or to get any 'missing' work from the parents of other children in his class. There will be no direct contact between the Tutor, the parents of other students, and the school.
Organization is a key component to this job. The Tutor is responsible for making sure that the student keeps his desks and papers tidy and filed, so that they can access materials at any time. The Tutor should photocopy the student's work and keep a back-up file, in case there is an instance of lost work.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
If the client wishes to take the Tutor with them when they travel, the client will be responsible for all expenses relating to the Tutor.
Accommodation, Fees, and Miscellaneous
This position requires the Tutor to submit daily reports to Tutors International, copied to both parents of the student, instead of the standard weekly reporting required by the Terms.
This assignment is for twelve months initially. It may be extended by mutual agreement of all parties. The fees payable to the Tutor will be £51k GBP.
