Battersea, London (BAT-0210)
This position is not currently available.
An experienced SEN teacher is required to home-school two fifteen year old girls in Battersea, London.

Students

The students are twin sisters. The girls are friendly and talkative in person, with a polite demeanour, and have a wide variety of interests. They enjoy learning and are looking forward to getting started with a new Tutor. They were keen to describe their ideal Tutor, and to talk about what they enjoy and dislike at school and for recreation. The girls enjoy many activities, including yoga, dance, music, art and design, non-competitive sports, cooking, sewing, computer games and staying in touch with friends.

The girls have been assessed with a combination of Attention Deficit Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Detailed evaluations have been carried out and these will be made available to shortlisted candidates. The girls have attended a variety of specialist schools, in the UK and Australia, but there are times when their distractive behaviour around other students makes it difficult for them to be educated in even a small class.

The Tutoring Role

The girls’ current academic age is around six years in some subjects. However, their academic capability is difficult to judge right now, because they can perform at a higher level when in a familiar situation. Their previous Tutor has been working at about Year 3 level, with expectations for their written work adapted to suit their specific difficulties.  The ideal goal is to raise their relative abilities to age nine over the next four years.  The Tutor will have a great deal of flexibility in developing the program of study as long as good progress towards the overall goal is being achieved.

An apartment has been rented near the family home that will serve as the schoolroom. The Tutor will play a pivotal role in resourcing as required. The Tutor should not limit their work to classroom-based activities, but should develop the girls’ academic skills through their interests. The girls respond well to a merit and reward system.

It is expected that the Tutor will be in regular communication with the family in regards to academic, emotional and social progress so that consistent strategies can be employed at school and home. It would be ideal that monthly meetings be held to discuss progress and concerns, and regular communication via email and/or telephone conversations is encouraged.

Hours and Travel

The school day will run from 8:45am - 4pm, Monday to Friday with a 15-minute morning break and thirty-minute lunch break. It would be ideal that the Tutor utilize this time to help the girls develop their social skills.  A time will be arranged for the Tutor to work with each of the girls on an independent basis for at least 1.25 hours once a week for specialized instruction and interaction.

The nearest tube station is Clapham Junction.  The Client will reimburse the Tutor monthly in arrears for public transport used during the previous month. The Tutor will need to keep the receipts or used tickets for this and supply a monthly spreadsheet.
