Students
She was born with tuberous sclerosis. Her seizures stopped soon after she was born, and frequent tests have shown no signs of the disease spreading. As would be expected, there have been developmental delays that have affected her academically, emotionally and socially. Her parents feel that she is currently about two years behind. There is every indication that with continued care and support from her educators and family, she will eventually catch up. She has received the very best care and support throughout her life so far, including special schooling, but there is the sense now that her rate of progress is being restricted by the school’s limitations of resources and its responsibilities to the other children. Although it is likely that she will always need longer to learn and retain information, and extra time to consider and present her thoughts, these are not reasons to expect any less of her.
The boy is energetic, physically active, demanding, and precocious. He is inventive, and gets bored easily. He is a natural leader, extremely competitive and likes to win, but needs to learn how to earn respect for his endeavours. He has recently shown an interest in chess. As with many young people, he responds best when he has firm, fair boundaries. He also likes being around water, enjoys a great many activities, and, like his sister speaks English and Spanish while currently learning French. He particularly likes construction games, and will soon have grown out of Lego into something more challenging, such as FischerTechnik. He has shown signs of hyperactivity that have been treated positively, but it is expected that an excellent Tutor who can help him develop more self-control as he matures will eliminate the need for medicinal intervention. He is a clever young man with an excellent mind for detail, and it is hoped that under the guidance of skilled and knowledgeable educators he will become enthusiastic about seeking to obtain worthy University qualifications before joining the family business.
The Tutoring Role
While in Miami Beach, the Tutor will shadow the girl throughout the school day, joining her in class and accompanying her to sessions with her various therapists. This will enable her to spend more time with her peers in the mainstream classroom than is currently possible. The Tutor will be expected to liaise closely with the children’s teachers, and with the girl’s therapists, so that their studies and her therapies can be continued and extended when the family are travelling and the children are not in formal school.
After school, while the family are in Miami Beach, the Tutor will help both children with their homework. The school policy is time rather than task related. This means that the children are expected to get as much done as they can in an allotted time rather than to make sure they finish the task no matter how long it takes.
The family own and run a chain of resorts, hotels and restaurants in several countries and would like to be able to visit more of them more often than is currently possible with the children’s schooling arrangements. Travel is anticipated throughout the US, Canada, and Europe, the Caribbean, Central America, Thailand, UAE, and the Middle East. It is also possible the family will relocate from Miami Beach to Lake Tahoe or Durango for extended periods while in the US. During these periods away, the Tutor will combine the therapies and the learning objectives for both children into educationally relevant yet fun activities that take full advantage of the resources at whatever the current location. When the children are not in school, it is expected that the Tutor will devote the mornings to academic subjects, and will then devote several hours after lunch to more active learning, including such as visits to areas of cultural interest, athletic activities, or the continuation of academic themes in dynamic, interesting ways. For example, when in France, it may be that learning to make cheese would provide the opportunity for some work with hand-eye coordination, mathematics, science and languages. Accordingly, the Tutor will have to be prepared to think creatively in planning activities that will be both enriching to the children, will be suitable for the girl and will make the most of the boy’s abundant energy.
Whatever the Tutor decides, it is essential that he or she develops an enjoyable and enriching experience of learning through living that goes beyond the classroom and which instills in the children a love of learning and of excellence in all that they undertake. This combination will reflect and support the family’s attitudes regarding the desire to develop a sense of confidence and self-awareness that can translate into excellent personal and social skills.
The possibility of moving to full time homeschooling has been mentioned. Should that transpire, the Tutor would have the additional responsibilities of finding and arranging suitable social opportunities for the children in the arts, music, drama and sports in each of the locations where they may be based.
It is hoped that the Tutor’s own depth of academic background and life experience will allow them to inspire the children by example as much to impart knowledge. Experience with living abroad is essential, as is competence in French and Spanish.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
When in Miami Beach the Tutor will take the children to school by 8.15am each morning. She or he will then shadow the girl in class and with her therapists throughout the school day. Finally, the Tutor will bring the children home after school ends at 3pm. The children then typically have a short break before starting their homework at 4pm. The Tutor should expect to be finished by 5pm.
During periods of travel it will be essential to establish a routine. This will need to include time for the Tutor to prepare materials and explore options for making the best of the local environment in addition to the time spent with the children. It is likely, therefore, that the Tutor’s hours will be roughly the same whether in Miami Beach or travelling with the family.
In addition to the extensive travel requirements of the position, there may be times with the Tutor is invited to join the family on vacation. If the Tutor accepts these invitations it is on the understanding that such times count towards the Tutor’s contractual paid vacation, and are not in addition to it.
The Client will pay for the Tutor’s first outward, final return, and two intermediate journeys home per contract term, as specified in the Terms.
Travel, and all expenses this incurs, will be met by the family on all journeys where tutoring takes place.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
Given the family’s projected travel plans over the course of the year, it is likely that some travel days that include the Tutor will fall on weekends, during which the Tutor would normally be off. If more than twelve weekend days are used for travel in this way, then the Tutor will be entitled to count the additional days either as untaken vacation allowance or as additional vacation. Untaken vacation allowance accruing at the end of the contracted term is compensated by payment in lieu thereof.
The family are private people who lead a non-pretentious and low-key lifestyle. It is a requirement that the Tutor respects the Client’s domestic lifestyle and maintains professional private-service decorum at all times.
The family have four dogs, both large and small, so the Tutor will need to be comfortable around animals. They also have several homes, some in isolated locations which are best reached by small plane; the Tutor will therefore also need to be at ease in all types of location and with a wide variety of modes of transport.
The Tutor should be a non-smoker, keen on sports and physical activity, and lead a clean and healthy lifestyle. While no restriction is made on the basis of gender as such, it is the view of the family that a female Tutor might be more suitable given their daughter’s condition.
