An experienced Tutor with a track record of successful preparation of students for the Harrow 11+ admissions test is required for 8 weeks starting early July 2011 in Aspen, Colorado.

Students

An 11-year-old boy will soon be taking the Harrow 11+ admissions test in September 2011. He would like to use the summer vacation to do some additional preparation for this test.

He is a bright, articulate, polite and engaging young man who is a pleasure to work with. He is keen on attending Harrow and wants to do well in the exams. He is good at Maths and Science, and works hard at school. He is well-travelled with good general knowledge, and he has a wide range of interests. He enjoys reading, but for reasons that never have been fully understood, has always struggled with writing. He finds it hard to get started with stories, and writes in continuous streams without punctuation.

His younger sister is 8, and would also like to benefit from the Tutor’s presence over the summer so that she does not feel left out. She too is intelligent and respectful.

The Tutoring Role

The areas of greatest concern for the student for exam preparation are the verbal reasoning and the writing parts of the test. He will need to learn some techniques for overcoming his writing block, and to make sure that he writes with punctuation and appropriate capitalisation. This will require a creative teacher who can explore a range of approaches until he or she lights on something that works for him.

The Tutor will offer educationally relevant yet fun activities to maintain his sister’s Maths, English and French.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor will work with the primary student for up to 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. The tutoring will typically be in the early morning or mid-afternoon depending on the family’s schedule. The Tutor will work with his sister for an average of an hour a day at times convenient to the Client.

This assignment is for 8 weeks, commencing July 8-15, depending on the Tutor’s availability. No vacation entitlement accrues on this contract.

The Client will be responsible for the Tutor’s full expenses arising from any travel required for the position throughout the contract term. A car, or suitable alternative arrangements, will be provided for the Tutor.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous

Accommodation will be provided, either in a small apartment style hotel or an additional home owned by the family. The accommodation will be suitable for a couple/partner. The Tutor is responsible for arranging his or her own meals.

The Tutor should be a non-smoker, lead a physically active lifestyle, and be healthy and fit.

If the Tutor wishes to bring his or her partner for the summer, this person will be responsible for his or her own flights. Alternatively, the Tutor can exchange the business class ticket the Client will purchase for two economy tickets.
