Students
His sister is also 16, but is in the lower sixth at an equally prestigious English private school. She is ambitious and conscientious, and this has been rewarded at school with responsibilities that reflect her maturity. She is taking an unusual combination of AS levels — Biology, English, Classics, and Philosophy & Ethics — this summer. In addition, she is retaking her Maths GCSE; due to illness during her exams last summer, she did not get quite get the grade she needs.
Both students are polite and engaging with excellent manners. They come from a family with a strong work ethic and will be a pleasure to work with.
The Tutoring Role
The boy is taking a broad range of GCSEs and needs to start revision in Biology, Chemistry, History, Geography, French and Latin. These two latter subjects need the most attention. He is finding it hard to develop techniques for memorising the required vocabulary and grammar. His disorganisation and attention issues mean that he will also benefit considerably from guidance about how to approach the revision of so much material between now and the summer, how to develop a revision timetable and routine, and how to pace himself and maintain focus.
His sister is extremely focused and knows what she wants to study at University. She works diligently with this ambition clearly at the forefront of her work. She is doing well at school, but wants to take full advantage of the Easter break to consolidate her knowledge so far. She finds the most difficulty at present with the Peloponnesian War section of her Classics course. She was disappointed with her Maths score last year and is keen to change the grade to an A or A* this summer. One of the challenges that both she and her brother face with Maths is that they started learning the subject in Jordan in Arabic. While the concepts are generally secure, the differences of presentation and method sometimes create errors that cost points.
