A highly organised, patient, and firm Tutor is required to work full time with a female student. She attends a top flight London private school, and is looking for a significant boost in her preparation for her upcoming GCSEs. The position starts in early April 2011 and will run through until the end of her GCSEs.

The Student

The student is 15 and is in Y11 at one of the most academic schools in London. She is a bright and pleasant young lady, well spoken and engaging. She is eager to do well this summer and keen to put in the effort that she knows this requires.

Due to a concern about the way school was treating her, she missed a whole term in the middle of her GCSE course. During this period out of school, her parents engaged the support of a tutoring company who also let her down badly. Unsurprisingly, this series of unfortunate events has impacted significantly on her confidence. Now, with the exams just around the corner, she and her parents feel that there is a real chance that the gaps left from the earlier debacle are likely to impact detrimentally on her summer results, and they would like put in place a program of intensive review and support from the start of the Easter vacation until the end of her GCSEs with a view to mitigating as many deficits as possible.

Her favourite teachers are evidently knowledgeable and deserve respect because of the way they motivate her to enjoy the subject. She prefers teachers who are firm but not strict, and those who can lighten their work with well-timed moments of humour.

The Tutoring Role

The Tutor will work with the student at her home or, if it proves to be too distracting there, at another location that offers the right working conditions. The Tutoring will take place from 10am and will generally occupy seven hours a day, including appropriate breaks. In addition, the student is expecting to be given homework, but the Tutor should try to ensure that this is never ‘busy work’. Instead, homework should only be set if the Tutor feels that it is necessary for her to practice a particular skill or prepare something for the next day’s tutoring.

The student is currently planning to take the following GCSEs:

  • English Literature
  • English Language
  • Dual Science
  • Maths
  • French
  • History
  • RS
  • Art

Of these, Science, Maths, and French require the greatest input from the Tutor, but all the subjects need to be revised and intensively prepped before the exams. One of the consequences of the missed time at school was that she needed to drop her Music GCSE. If possible, perhaps through taking an exam or two at a different exam centre, she would like to explore whether she could prepare for the triple Science instead, or for an IGCSE or two instead of or as well as her best GCSE subjects, to boost her overall performance back to the same number of GCSEs she originally started. Whether this is possible will need to be evaluated soon after the Tutor starts working with her, and will require close consultation Tutors International.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor should expect to work an average of 35 hours a week with breaks as needed, spread over a 6-day-week. Preparation time is in addition to this. No holiday entitlement accrues on this contract.

The Client will be responsible for all costs relating to the Tutor’s travel. If this involves driving, the Tutor will be reimbursed at 40p per mile, and parking charges (not penalties) will be covered. If travel involves public transport the Client will reimburse the Tutor for a season ticket covering the requisite London zones.
