Perugia, Italy (IT0605)
This position is not currently available.
A well-qualified and experienced teacher is sought as private tutor to work with our client’s 15-year-old son. The boy is pleasant, highly intelligent and well-motivated. The start date is as soon as possible, ideally before Christmas 2005, initially for 18 months.

The boy’s ambition is to be a professional tennis player, and he is about to move to a prestigious training academy in Perugia, Italy. (Until now, the boy has been enrolled at a top-flight private school in London). Perugia is an attractive historical town in Umbria - population 150,000 - some 100 miles south-east of Florence.

The long-term academic goals are not yet clear, and depend on the outcome of the tennis training. If the boy is successful, long-term tutoring will be extended into A-levels and university entrance.

Education

The tutor must ensure the boy keeps up his studies and develops a good academic record. In the longer-term, the parents are anticipating acceptance at a top university, (in the US or the UK). Currently, the boy is studying GCSEs in Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Latin. He is taking French GCSE this summer, and will be learning Italian in Perugia, so a facility with languages would be useful.

The client recognises that this subject range is very broad. The ideal tutor would be a strong science teacher, who is also highly literate, with a personal interest in languages and history.

Tutoring will need to fit around a full training and tournament program - the time available for studies will be approximately 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. The tutor will need to be highly organised and keep good records. The boy will only take each GCSE when the tutor feels a top grade is more-or-less certain. The boy will remain enrolled in his London school, who have offered to support him with course materials and assessment as required - the tutor’s collaboration with the school will be an important aspect of the job.

Attributes

The boy will benefit from a youthful yet firm tutor who is enthusiastic about sports. The tutor will have a vital role to play, being part of a team of adults supporting this young man’s professional tennis career. The academic side is important, of course, but the tutor must appreciate the main goal here is to help someone with exceptional tennis ability to achieve their full potential.

The right tutor will join in and support the boy outside of the teaching, sharing in day-to-day activities such as running the apartment, meals and other light duties. The job will require flexibility, close communication with the coach, and creativity and fun to keep the studying moving forward through a punishing, 6-hours-a-day, training schedule.

Accommodation & Holidays

Accommodation will be provided in the apartment shared by the boy and his tennis coach. The tutor will have his own bedroom, and will share bathroom and communal rooms. All bills on the lodging will be covered, but the tutor will have to provide their own board. The tutor should be a non-smoker.

Holidays will be taken at times convenient to the client and the coach. The tutor should expect to have 9 weeks off per year as per our standard Terms of Business.

Contractual buy-out

The client is looking for the right person and is prepared, in principle, to pay a suitable amount to release a tutor from an existing contract. The exact terms of such an arrangement would need to be discussed.
