Job spec changed to part-time
A suitably qualified and experienced tutor is required to work part-time with a 15-year-old boy in north London. The boy is struggling at school and will be educated at home for his final year of GCSEs.
Circumstances
The boy is pleasant but unmotivated. He is so reluctant to complete academic tasks that it’s hard to say whether this indicates an underlying lack of ability or simple unwillingness. He has some problems interpreting social cues and appropriate behaviour, and needs help with personal organisation.
Many of his behaviours indicate NVLD or AS and a formal assessment by an EdPsych is pending. (When the boy has been assessed, the report will be made available to the tutor.)

It is not certain, at present, what the boy’s ambitions beyond his GCSEs will be - he lacks any clear direction. His parents hope that he will do well enough to qualify for additional training, or even to leave open the option of University. This uncertainty about the future affects the choice of GCSEs.
Education
At the very least, the tutor should be able to teach Maths, Science (Dual Award) and English. The boy is an excellent sportsman, competent in many sports. This is an important part of his life and he is very interested in PE - it may be possible to add this GCSE to his curriculum. Further insight may reveal other subjects that may appeal to him, which his school did not offer. If there is a coursework requirement in any of the boy’s subjects, the tutor will need to liaise with the local school to ensure this aspect is completed satisfactorily.
Schedule
The tutoring will take place Monday to Friday, for 3 hours in the mornings. It should not be necessary to set any homework until examination preparation begins in earnest next summer. Evenings will be left free for the boy to continue with his sports activities. There may be some additional duties involved in taking him to and from some of these recreational pursuits. Given the importance of this element of his life, it would be an advantage if the tutor were also physically active, and played cricket, tennis, or table-tennis.
Other Aspects
Accommodation is not provided for this position, and the tutor will need to commute or relocate.
Likewise, no car is provided for this post. Expenses for commuting via public transport will be reimbursed, and/or a mileage allowance at 40p per mile.
The tutor will be entitled to normal school holiday time, with the exception of Easter 2006, which may be needed for intensive exam preparation.
