Corsica, Switzerland, and Cyprus (CSC-0611)
This position is not currently available.
A Tutor is required to work with two tri-lingual children during an 8-week summer holiday.

The Tutor will be required to spend most of their working time with the children as an addition to the family. This is a full-time post involving interaction, tutoring, mentoring, learning activities, confidence-building, etc.

Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Students

There are two children. The boy is 10 years old and will be going into year 6 at the start of September. The girl is 9 years old and will be starting year 5. Both children attend the International School in Switzerland where they are taught in English; they follow a curriculum that will culminate in the Baccalaureate at 18. The children have different interests and personalities, and both are tri-lingual in English, Greek and French.

The boy is very sporty - he is an accomplished skier and wind surfer, which is no mean feat for a 10 year old. However, he doesn’t always realise his own strength, and this has occasionally been a problem with his peers. He is a typical young boy who has recently become ‘one of the crowd,’ and as a result, he is easily distracted from his schoolwork. He is relatively introverted until he gets to know people, and then he opens up into a charming young man. He has recently started to notice girls.

The girl is more academically focused than her brother. She currently has a fascination with insects and arachnids of all varieties — the more disgusting the better. She has no problem handling her finds, and this has sometimes been a cause of contention in social settings. She is curious about everything, and is fairly advanced for her year group. She is a delightful, open, polite girl who displays insight and behaviour beyond her years.

The Tutoring Role

The Tutor will spend most of their working day with the children, though only 1 or 2 hours of this will be formal academic tuition. The Tutor should encourage and develop the children’s interests outside the formal classroom setting and will act as a guide or mentor where appropriate. For parts of the day the Tutor’s role may be no more than keeping an eye on them. A small amount of time could be domestic tasks, eg. helping them tidy their room, or preparing something to eat.

The main educational priority is to build the confidence of the children and to prepare them well for their next academic year. The boy in particular will benefit from attention to his Maths and written English.

The job itself is based in three locations during the summer. The family will be in Corsica for a month, where they have a second home and their own boat. They will then briefly return to Switzerland before their vacation in Cyprus.

The boy is academically able but lacks confidence in mental arithmetic. He has a strong vocabulary, but again lacks the confidence to use this in his written work. The Tutor should use the summer period to revisit year 5 Mathematics, and build solid foundations for his entry to year 6. Likewise, a gentle focus on his writing skills would benefit him enormously.

The girl is proficient in all areas, and should be encouraged to develop across the board. She should aim to enter year 5 in an excellent academic position. With the support and guidance of a summer tutor well versed in entomology as well as other subjects, she will be a delight to teach.

Ideally the successful candidate will speak English and French. They should be a good swimmer — an interest in marine life would be an advantage. The successful candidate should be upbeat, energetic, flexible and resourceful with a broad knowledge across all subjects. An ability to play a musical instrument — especially guitar — would be helpful. The position would suit someone who is good at busying themselves with their own free time, someone who enjoys reading, drawing, writing, etc.

The Tutor should be aware that the family has strong personal security measures in place, and employs staff to assist them in every location.

The right person will be wholly accepted into the family and will be expected to join them in all locations — in their holiday home, on their boat, at the beach etc. The Tutor should build excellent relationships with both the children, their mother and her partner, and will ideally fit seamlessly with the family.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

Although the academic requirements of this position are not onerous, it is a full-time position. The Tutor will be living in close proximity to the family and should expect to adapt to their plans, responding flexibly to the client’s requirements in terms of availability and working time.

The Tutor should expect to deliver one to two hours of academic tuition each day. There will be less formal educational opportunities as well, eg. visits and excursions.

The family are on holiday, so every day will be different depending on location and planned activities - the Tutor needs to be flexible. The Tutor may be invited to join in family activities, going for a meal, etc, or they may be free to go off on their own.

Time off is subject to prior agreement, but the family will ensure that the Tutor has time off every day, and at least one free day per week. The maximum workload will be 48 hours in a 6-day week.

Other than time off, there is no separate holiday entitlement, due to the short nature of the contract.

The family will split their time between Corsica, (either at the house or on the boat), Switzerland and Cyprus. The Tutor will be required to accompany them at all times. The Tutor will incorporate these locations as part of a tuition plan, for example, through exploring marine life, variations in ecology, etc. in addition to traditional Mathematics and literacy.

Accommodation and Transport

The client will provide full board and lodging within their homes.

The Tutor will have access to the client’s transport on days off.
