The Student
The boy is a charming and polite young man, with an easy-going nature, quick wit and dry sense of humour. He has several interests, notably marine biology and herpetology, playing music (guitar and drums) and has a growing appreciation of food and cooking. He is particularly enthusiastic when using modern technology, gadgets and anything to do with computers. He enjoys playing sports, especially racket sports such as squash, tennis and table tennis, is a strong swimmer and also likes fishing. Although he is not competitive, fairness is important to him.
The Tutoring Role
The boy is taking the following 10 IGCSEs: English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Economics, Business Studies and ICT.
Particular attention will need to be given by the Tutor to the boy’s writing and reasoning skills, and in his ability to express opinions and arguments, both of which are perhaps a little underdeveloped. Of particular emphasis in the immediate term are Mathematics, Science and IT; the boy shows most aptitude and interest in these subjects. If possible, it would be advantageous for the Tutor to develop a relationship with a local school as a possible exam centre — if any of the subjects could be taken in the January sitting, it would be obviously lessen the pressure in June 2012.
It is also expected that some emphasis will be placed on physical education. The boy likes to cycle and kayak, and is benefiting from working out at the gym.
Academically, the boy responds well to close direction and it is hoped that he will become more of an independent learner as he matures. A dedicated teaching room will be provided in each location where tutoring will take place, but the Tutor should take the opportunity to expand the learning experience for the boy to include local resources where possible. This could include involvement with other home school groups or programmes within the area.
In addition, the Tutor will need to identify local opportunities for involving the boy in sports, and to exploit opportunities for him to mix with other young people of his age.
It is envisaged that a typical working week will be 9am — 4.30pm and include sports and extra curricular activities on a daily basis, Monday to Friday. In addition, now that the boy’s exams are on the horizon, he should expect 2-3 hours of homework a night, and this will likely increase when the exams near. It is important that he learns to work independently and efficiently, and both parents have agreed to support the homework and ensure it is completed. The Tutor will need to develop a timetable and curriculum for each subject, as well as suitable assessments to keep track of his progress in comparison to his peers in the UK. The Tutor will also need to select the most appropriate courses and examinations for him to take in consideration of his preferred learning styles.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous
