The Client is looking for a teacher, or possibly a teaching couple, who have an exemplary track record at teaching the best students to achieve superb grades at A levels in English, History, Latin, and one or other (or both) of Classics or Religious Studies. It would be an advantage if the Tutor(s) also had experience with SATs and preparation for US College entry, but this is not essential. The job might suit a teaching couple who would share the role and who between them could offer all the required A level subjects.
Ideally the Tutor(s) will be what is considered today to be a traditional scholar — educated, intelligent, erudite, familiar with the classics and classical thought, rhetoric and philosophy, and Latin or Greek. It is essential for the Tutor(s) to be able to inspire and to challenge our Client’s daughter to learn, not only to the standards required to open up the possibility of enrolment in Ivy League or Oxbridge Universities, but also to continue to foster a lifelong love of the continuous acquisition of knowledge.
This role is wide-ranging, and will suit an exceptional educator, someone able to adapt their knowledge and teaching style to a student who leads a busy and active sporting and social life. The Tutor(s) will need to work closely with an existing Mathematics and Science Tutor to create a homogeneous and coherent education, highly organised, well structured and purposeful. The Tutors must function as a team to ensure the learning experience is fully balanced, effective and enjoyable.
The position will commence in January 2012 and will last until the student has completed her A levels, probably in June 2013.
Students
The girl is a thoughtful young lady who loves English literature and is curious about theological discourse; she also has a growing interest in Chemistry and History. She has already achieved A grades in IGCSE Maths and English, and has just taken IGCSEs in Science, History, Latin and Religious Studies. She has shown herself to be capable of excellence in all that she undertakes and increasing confidence in subjects across the board has demonstrated that she is capable of becoming an accomplished polymath. She is aiming for acceptance at an Ivy or Oxbridge and requires a Tutor who will enable her to translate her enormous potential into success in her upcoming A levels. She is keen to learn about theological and literary debates that are outside her curriculum, and is working on a literary program with the possible aim to study Literature at University. She responds best to Tutors with whom she can relate and share experiences, and it is therefore essential the Tutor(s) share some of her interests. She is an accomplished equestrian and competes regularly at prestigious shows across the country. She enjoys reading, music and period drama films, and is involved in many activities at the family’s church. Given the breadth of her interests and extra-curricular activities, and therefore the time pressures she is under, the Tutor(s) will need to ensure the teaching is both dynamic and efficient.
Her brother is a confident and engaging young man with a strong desire to understand all that he encounters. Having passed IGCSEs in Maths and English, he has just taken further IGCSEs in Science, History and Latin, and is also working on his SAT. He has an inquisitive mind and often asks lateral questions. He thrives when the learning process is systematic, and when the material is presented with clarity and purpose. He can learn quickly when motivated and when he can see his progress and achievements; it is vital that his Tutor is encouraging, especially when material needs to be repeated. The Tutor(s) will therefore need to maintain a warm and highly supportive framework with plenty of sensitivity to any challenges that arise. The young man has varied interests outside school, foremost of which is golf at which he too regularly competes.
The Tutoring Role
As well as her A levels, the young woman is also working towards the SAT (and SAT subject tests), as an essential part of US college admissions. The Tutor needs to be sensitive to the aims and needs in all spheres of her assessed education, and will need to coordinate the learning material so that these areas are addressed without conflict. Regular meetings with parents will be required to ensure that all is running smoothly and that progress is in keeping with the Client’s expectations.
The Tutor needs to remain flexible, with a youthful adaptability, but without any loss of discipline when accommodating the parents’ organic, fluid schedule. This can often mean that the student’s plans may change at short notice, and that her sports and community commitments may affect the Tutor's plans. This means that Tutor will need to be all the more structured and organised. The Tutor must also ensure that despite fluctuating schedules, the student is kept well informed of her progress and progression, and that she is always aware of what is being asked of her.
There is a well-equipped and dedicated schoolroom, which the Tutor(s) will be responsible for ensuring remains organised and properly stocked. The Tutor(s) should expect Saturday and Sunday off each week, but will need to be flexible in this regard. Meals occurring during teaching times will be taken with the family.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutor(s) will be entitled to the standard minimum nine weeks paid vacation per annum and should recognise in advance that this means that there may be the need to work through some of the standard school vacations, especially when close to examinations.
The Tutor(s) should expect to travel with the family several times a year, for a few weeks at a time. At these times the Client will cover all expenses for the Tutor(s).
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
The Client will also make arrangements for a car for the personal use by the Tutors throughout their contract, and will cover all expenses involved in the running of this car for work-related purposes, including comprehensive insurance. This car will be shared by all the Tutors and will be available for getting to and from work and home, and for local use. The Tutors will be responsible for the costs arising from their own personal use of the car, and for any damage they cause which is not covered by insurance. The car is not to be used for long journeys outside Atlanta - if the Tutor wishes to drive further afield he or she will need to make their own transport arrangements.
The family are active Christians whose commitment to their faith plays a central role in their lives. While it is not requirement that the Tutor(s) be of any particular faith, it is essential he or she is sympathetic and open-minded, and certainly that they have no agenda of their own in this regard.
The family have a dog and the girl rides horses. The Tutor will therefore need to be comfortable around animals.
A non-smoker, who leads a healthy lifestyle and takes regular exercise, is preferred. This position would suit men or women, single or married, and all ages, races and nationalities will be considered.
