Seattle, USA (SEA-0212)
This position is not currently available.
An experienced tutor is required for this full time tutoring role involving a 17 year old during his summer vacation between 10th and 11th grade. The position is based mainly in Seattle, USA, and runs from the July 1st to August 31st, 2012. The role involves SAT/ACT prep and revision and consolidation courses in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and AP Math.

The Student

The student is 17 and is enrolled at one of the best private boarding schools in Canada, where he is doing extremely well in all aspects of school life. He enjoys many sports, is popular with his peers, and is expected to go on to a first rate University in the US. He is mature, hard-working, and committed to his studies. The young man will be a joy for a skilled and energetic educator to work with on a daily and intensive basis.

The student is highly able and has set his sights on MIT. However, the young man is dyslexic, and has found it hard to work at the speed required to get the scores he needs to be successful. It is envisaged that as well as consolidating the subject knowledge, the Tutor will be able to help him continue to develop strategies/tricks for moving quickly and accurately through the parts of the SAT and ACT that he can so that he has more time to dwell on the areas that he finds more taxing.

Role of the Tutor

As the student is on his summer holidays and ostensibly available all of every day, it will be important for the Tutor to work with him and his family to establish a reasonable routine that fits everyone’s requirements without being too onerous. The hours and days of work are not known at present, but in general terms the Tutor should expect to work for up to an average of 40 hours per week, and an average of 6 days a week. This time includes preparation of materials and grading of work completed.

The Tutor will need to be flexible with regard the work with the student. Not only is it the summer vacation, and therefore a time for some rest for the young man, there will also be periods of travel within the US, some time on the family’s boat, with trips to Canada and San Juan islands in the offing, and possibly a trip to Hawaii if Seattle’s weather is unpleasant.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor will typically work daily with the student according to the timetable they devise, so that the Tutor does not exceed an average of 40 hours per week or more than 6 days per week.

Any untaken days off that have accrued at the end of the contract period will be compensated by payment in lieu.

The Client will provide a car for the use by the Tutor throughout the assignment.

If the Tutor should be invited to accompany the Client when they travel they will be responsible for all the Tutor’s expenses.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous

The Tutor will be provided with accommodation throughout their assignment. This will either be in a suite of rooms in the family home, sharing with the student’s brother's Tutor, or sharing a berth with the student aboard the family yacht.

If the Tutor should accompany the family when they travel, accommodation will usually be in a hotel, and the Client will be responsible for the Tutor’s meals and all subsistence expenses during such times.

The Tutor must be fit and healthy, and a non-smoker. It would be preferable if the Tutor enjoyed outdoor sports, which are particular popular in the Seattle area and which the family and the student enjoy tremendously.

When the Tutor is living in the Client’s home, he or she will not be able to invite guests and should be respectful at all times of the Client’s privacy. Although the Client has an informal style at home regarding their staff, the Tutor must maintain appropriate levels of private service professionalism and decorum at all times.
