The Client needs a teacher who has an exemplary track record at teaching the best students to achieve superb grades at A levels in History and English Literature. The job might suit a teaching couple who would share the role.
Ideally the Tutor will be what is considered today to be a traditional scholar — educated, intelligent, erudite, familiar with the classics and classical thought, rhetoric and philosophy. It is essential for the Tutor(s) to be able to inspire and challenge our Client’s daughter to learn, not only to the standards required for entry to the best Universities, but also to further a lifelong love of learning, knowledge and its application.
This role will suit an exceptional educator, someone able to adapt their knowledge and teaching style to a student who leads a busy and active sporting and social life. The Tutor(s) will need work closely with an existing Mathematics Tutor to create a homogeneous and coherent education: highly organised, well structured, and purposeful. The Tutors must function as a team to ensure the learning experience is fully balanced, effective, and enjoyable.
The position will commence in September 2012 and will last until the summer exams are completed in May/June 2013.
Student
She is a thoughtful young lady who loves English literature and is curious about theological discourse; she also has a growing interest in Chemistry and History. She has already achieved A*/A grades in IGCSE Maths, English, History, Religious Studies and Physics, and Bs in Biology and Chemistry.
She has shown herself to be capable of excellence in all that she undertakes and increasing confidence in subjects across the board has demonstrated that she is capable of becoming an accomplished polymath. She is aiming for acceptance at an Ivy or Oxbridge and requires a Tutor or Tutors who will enable her to translate her enormous potential into success in her upcoming A levels.
She is keen to continue to learn about theological and literary debates that are outside her curriculum, and is working on a literary program with the possible aim to study Literature and philosophy at University.
She responds best to Tutors with whom she can relate and share experiences, and it is therefore essential the Tutor share some of her interests. She is a keen horse rider and competes regularly at prestigious shows across the country. She enjoys reading, music and period drama films, and is involved in many activities at the family’s church. Given the breadth of her interests and extra-curricular activities, and therefore the time pressures she is under, the Tutor will need to ensure the teaching is both dynamic and efficient.
Her older brother is a confident and engaging young man with a strong desire to understand all that he encounters. Having passed IGCSEs in Maths, English, History and Science, he is also working on his SAT. He has an inquisitive mind and often asks lateral questions. He thrives when the learning process is systematic, and when the material is presented with clarity and purpose. He can learn quickly when motivated and when he can see his progress and achievements; it is vital that the Tutor is encouraging if any material needs to be repeated. The Tutor will therefore need to maintain a warm and highly supportive framework with plenty of sensitivity to any challenges that arise. He has varied interests outside school, foremost of which is golf.
Role of the Tutor
She is taking AS Mathematics and English Language in May/June 2012 while she concentrates on SAT preparation for her US College applications. In October/November 2012 she will take the AS English Literature, and in May/June 2013 she will complete her school studies when she sits AS History and A2 Mathematics and English Literature.
Regular meetings with the parents will be required to ensure that all is running smoothly and that progress is in keeping with the Client’s expectations.
The Tutor needs to remain flexible, with a youthful adaptability, but without any loss of discipline when accommodating the parents’ organic, fluid schedule. This can often mean that the student’s plans may change at short notice. Although it may sometimes appear otherwise, her sports and community commitments will not be placed second to her studies. This means that Tutor will need to be all the more structured and organised. The Tutor must also ensure that, despite fluctuating schedules, she is kept well informed of her progress, and that the Tutor’s expectations of her are clear and unambiguous.
There is a dedicated schoolroom, which is well equipped, and the Tutor will be responsible for ensuring that this remains organised and properly stocked. The Tutor should expect Saturday and Sunday off each week, but will need to be flexible in this regard. Meals occurring during teaching times will be taken with the family.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutor will be entitled to the standard minimum nine weeks paid vacation per annum.
The Tutor may be invited to travel with the family from time to time. If this is the case the Client will cover all expenses for the Tutor.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
The Client will also make arrangements for a car for the personal use by the Tutors(s) throughout their contract, and will cover all expenses involved in the running of this car for work-related purposed, including comprehensive insurance. This car will be shared between all the Tutors and will be available for getting to and from work and home, and for local use only. The Tutors will be responsible for the costs arising from their own personal use of the car, and for any damage they cause and which is not covered by insurance. The Tutor is free to use his/her own car, and if this is what he/she chooses then he/she will be entitled to claim for mileage at the rate of $0.72 USD per mile.
The family are active Christians whose commitment to their faith plays a central role in their lives. While it is not requirement that the Tutor be of any particular faith, it is essential he/she is sympathetic and open-minded, and certainly has no agenda in this regard.
The family have a dog and the young lady rides horses. The Tutor will therefore need to be comfortable around animals.
A non-smoker, who leads a healthy lifestyle and takes regular exercise, is preferred.
