Miami, Florida (FLO-1105)
This position is not currently available.
Our client lives just south of Miami and is looking for a well-qualified and experienced educator to work as a full time private tutor. The client has three girls: the younger two, aged 8 and 12, will be the primary focus. An older daughter attends boarding school - the tutor may work with her by email, if required, and sometimes at weekends.

The parents value education and are very supportive. The children are all highly intelligent, polite and a pleasure to work with; they are mature, well travelled, and have been exposed to a wide variety of cultural experiences. They are looking forward to working with a tutor, and to developing their potential beyond what school can offer.

Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

The girls

The 12-year-old will be entering boarding school in autumn 2007. The tutor will ensure that her schoolwork is completed to a high standard, identifying any weaknesses. Activities should be developed to augment the learning at school, to broaden what is being studied, and to resolve any difficulties. At present, Maths and English (Writing skills) appear to require the most attention.

The 8-year-old received an excellent kindergarten education and was immediately moved from Grade 1 to Grade 2 when she started school. She found school easy, and it appears that the lack of effort required in the early grades has led to some possible deficiencies relating to study skills. The tutor will need to pay particular attention to the development of these skills.

Languages and Sports

All three children are effectively bilingual in Spanish and English, and have good French. The tutor must be able to build on the children’s French, and perhaps add some Italian. (Mandarin Chinese has also been mentioned). A tutor who can offer a range of languages will be given preference.

The children enjoy many sports, including tennis, horseback riding, swimming and water sports. The tutor will need to be youthful, fit and healthy, and keen to participate in recreational activities, both for enjoyment and to enhance learning.

Holidays and Travel

Time off - 8 weeks per annum - will generally follow US school vacation times. The client may ask the tutor to accompany the family on vacation and, should they do so, this time will be in addition to the normal vacation allowance. If it is not ‘time off’ then other mutually acceptable arrangements should be agreed, eg. an additional pro-rated allowance. During family vacations the client will cover all expenses, travel and accommodation for the tutor.

The family generally go to their second home in the Florida Keys on alternate weekends, and the tutor should expect to accompany them regularly on these trips. Travel is usually by boat, so the tutor should be at ease travelling in this way. The family also has pets - dogs and birds - so the tutor will need to be comfortable around animals.

Other Factors

Schedule - The hours of work will normally be 3.30pm to 9pm, Monday through Thursday, plus Sunday evenings from 6pm to 9pm. Some additional weekend days may be required, by arrangement. Dinner during working days will be taken with the family.

Accommodation - Separate, fully-furnished accommodation will be provided, in the coach house on the grounds of the family’s home. All bills will be covered, with the exception of food and telephone for private use. The apartment has internet facilities and a car is provided for the use of the tutor.

The position would especially suit a single woman who has been privately-educated and graduated from a first rate University in the UK or Europe.
