This position affords an able teacher a special opportunity to make a massive difference for a lovely family.
Students
The children are being raised to be well-behaved young people with a strong work ethic and responsibility for themselves and their possessions. Their parents set firm and fair boundaries, and the children have age-appropriate chores. The children are caring and thoughtful, polite and respectful, and they want to do well and earn the satisfaction and pride that comes with success. The children are looking forward to starting school again and making new friends, although the boys are, as would be expected, less excited about school and homework. They will be a pleasure for a talented and energetic teacher to work with every day.
The oldest boy has had a slightly checkered educational pathway so far, including some bullying, gaps in schooling, and periods of homeschooling with a far from ideal teacher. It is estimated that he is perhaps three years behind his academic peer group, and will be starting at the school in grade 4; it is hoped that he will quickly make up ground, but his parents don’t mind if he stays down a year or two if needed. There clearly remains some pronunciation deficit, but he is bright, interested in the world at large, and conversational, and it is likely only a matter of a few more months before he can talk without any remaining issues. He is confident in sharing his own mind while remaining open to incorporating others’ opinions and perspectives. He loves games, especially where strategy plays a key role. He is learning to play chess, enjoys computer games, especially Halo, and is constantly thinking of variations. He enjoys sports, particularly baseball and swimming, and has a wide taste in popular music. He is somewhat overweight and this hampers his freedom to join in sports, but he is working hard on his fitness and nutrition and certainly has everything under control. He is keen to explore chemistry with his Tutor, and likes teachers who can allow him the freedom to talk around the material while still keeping him firmly on track without him feeling as if he is not being allowed the time for self-expression and exploration.
His younger brother is much more gregarious and outgoing, and he loves acting and drama and being the center of attention. He thrives when he knows the details of all arrangements in advance and feels uncomfortable when he does not know these things. Although he is seventeen months younger than his brother, he is only about a school year behind, and will be going into grade 3. He also likes games and music and lots of sports, and is witty and engaging in conversation. He is a very active young man, always running around. He too enjoys baseball and swimming, and would like to learn to ice-skate when he gets to Singapore. He can find it hard to unwind and rest, and this means that he can become over-tired. He is a bright and curious young man, and although outgoing and sociable, has no problem entertaining himself for hours with a good film, music video or game. His favorite teachers set clear boundaries and expectations; they are firm, even strict, and unerringly fair.
Their 6 year old sister is a very clever girl, bright and bubbly, polite and engaging. She loves to read and is academically on track. Like her brothers, she loves sports and is also particularly good at baseball. She is clearly able to accomplish anything she wants, and there is plenty of scope for a good Tutor to develop her skills across the board. The youngest child is doing fine, learning her alphabet and numbers. She loves being read to and is also bright and engaging.
Role of the Tutor
School will typically start at 8am and finish at 2pm with appropriate mid-morning and lunch breaks. It will be essential for the Tutor to establish a timetable with a comprehensive work/reward system from the start. Twice a week, each of the children has piano lessons for 45 minutes. During these the Tutor will have some one-on-one time with the boys.
In the afternoons the children have a wide range of activities, mainly swimming and basketball. They also enjoy football (rugby league). This is time the Tutor may use to enhance these activities or for preparation and planning.
Once the position relocates to Singapore the role will become a full time after school support role, helping the children complete their school and homework, filling in gaps in their knowledge exposed by the new start and school system, and with test and quiz preparation, time management and so on.
The family are planning to spend about half of the year in Singapore, and this means that even when based there, there will be times during the school year when the family will be traveling. During these periods of travel during term-time, the Tutor will be responsible for ensuring the children keep up with their schoolwork. Close liaison with their school and individual teachers will be essential to ensure course content is correctly covered including, if the school requires it, submission of key assignments.
The Client will provide a suitable and separate teaching space in all locations.
The Tutor needs to remain flexible, with a youthful adaptability, but without any loss of discipline when accommodating the parents’ organic, fluid schedule. This may cause the Tutor to be given short notice of final details and yet she or he must be ready.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutor should expect to work around 40 hours per week with preparation in addition. The Tutor will be entitled to an average of two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, but may need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and the children’s other activities.
The Tutor will be entitled to the standard annual nine weeks paid vacation as set out in the Terms.
The family have homes in Hawaii and Australia. They travel frequently between them and to a wide range of destinations worldwide. The Tutor should expect to travel with the family and their staff, and to tailor any periods of home-schooling that occur during these travels to take advantage of the locale and the travel arrangements.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
The ideal applicant will be single, with plenty of experience, enthusiasm, and energy. She or he will need a track record of home-schooling and working alongside schools and must be capable of adapting working style to fit the variable circumstances of working with four children at home or while traveling. The Tutor should be a non-smoker, physically fit, imaginative and inventive.
The family have two nannies that mainly look after the younger children, and the parents are also hands on and involved with their children. The family are well known in certain circles, and as a consequence they have comprehensive private security, always close but never intrusive. The Tutor will need to be mindful of the family’s constraints at this level and work with security if they wish to arrange an excursion anywhere.
The school that the children will attend in Singapore teaches Chinese language and so it would be helpful if the Tutor either already had some ability or was willing to learn the language as needed. The children have also been learning Indonesian, which they would like to continue. French and Spanish have also been mentioned as languages the children might learn and it would therefore be useful if the Tutor could contribute to this language instruction in some way.
