The student leads an active after-school life, involving athletics, other sports, dancing and riding. Tutoring should not impact on this time - we do not want her to feel “punished” by having these enjoyable activities taken away from her to make room for extra tuition.
Education
The girl has been assessed and found not to have dyslexia or dyscalculia. Nevertheless, there is some indication that she may have a specific learning difference of some sort. A new EdPsych report will be available in mid-February, and shortlisted candidates will be apprised of its findings. We are looking for a tutor who can respond to Special Needs and alter their teaching style accordingly.
Tutoring Schedule
It may also be sensible for the tutor to sit in on some of the student’s lessons to provide her with extra help. This may not be limited to English or Maths lessons but could cover other areas of the syllabus where help with reading and writing is required.
The girl’s current timetable shows her English and Maths lessons tend to be in the morning, so it should be fairly straightforward to devise a suitable schedule. The tutor should have sufficient flexibility to respond to any timetable changes, and to the new timetable that will come into effect in September.
These arrangements are not yet in place, so the exact number and distribution of working hours is not known. The post has potentially fewer hours than a standard full-time contract, but the appointed tutor will need to make this position their only job The post is regarded as full time, and it is important that the tutor shows a certain flexibility.
Other factors
Welwyn is close to North London and the tutor is likely to commute - the client will meet reasonable travel expenses on public transport, or mileage for the tutor at the rate of 40p per mile.
Accommodation
Most candidates will not be expecting accommodation. However, a relocation package, with accommodation provided, may be available for an outstanding candidate.
Holidays
It is not anticipated that the tutor will normally accompany the family when they travel for their vacations, so it is probable that the tutor will be off during these times. If the tutor should be asked to accompany the family on their holidays, the client will cover all expenses.
Sport
A tutor with an athletics or sporting background, who could offer additional coaching in these areas, would be ideal. However, this is a secondary consideration behind the principal educational requirements.
