The tutor will also be required to provide French tuition to the boy’s mother and to give the family’s two younger daughters some help with their French and their homework.
In the summer of 2006, the family are relocating to south-west France, to a small village 30km south of Angouleme. They will be restoring their house and various outbuildings. The property is currently in a state of some disrepair and whilst the tutor’s accommodation is to be renovated before anything else, applicants should expect a certain amount of “roughing it”. The tutor should therefore be relatively independent and self-reliant. They should be flexible and able to adapt their teaching to the conditions.
The tutor will be living and working in close proximity with the family and should have an easy-going personality.
Student
The student is a personable, polite young man who has been performing adequately at school. In addition to the improvement in his French, the intention is that a year of home-schooling will give his general educational standard a boost for the next year.
Role of the Tutor
The main focus of his education should be French Language, Maths and English. A computer with internet access will be available and this should be used where possible.
The tutor will make use of the natural world and the countryside to provide educational opportunities. Additionally, trips to local places of interest, museums etc. should be used to support the teaching. Where possible, elements of the curriculum should be turned into longer term projects that will engage the boy.
The student’s interest in sport and outdoor activities is to be encouraged by active participation from the tutor and by joining in local sports clubs etc.
The tutor will be responsible for determining and obtaining any materials and books that are required - the client will cover the necessary costs.
The tutor will help the younger girls (aged 5 and 8) with their French and with any homework which is causing them difficulty.
In addition, the tutor will provide French language tuition for the mother. She has been having a couple of hours per week tuition, but recognises that her language skills are one of the key factors in making the move to France a success and would like to become as fluent as possible.
Hours and Holidays
The tutor will typically be working with the boy from 9:00 – 12:00 and then 13:00 – 15:00. Additionally they will provide 1 hour per day French tuition to the mother. The remaining time will be either helping the two younger girls with their French and any homework or additional work with the boy.
The tutor will normally work Monday to Friday with weekends off. Some flexibility is expected, but the tutor will always be entitled to 2 consecutive days off per week.
During the 10 months of the contract, the tutor will be entitled to seven weeks paid holiday. This will be arranged in advance with the clients and will probably coincide with the school holidays for the younger children.
Other Aspects
A room will be provided in the main house for use as a school room.
The house is located some distance from the nearest town or village. The tutor will need to be able to drive in order to get into town for shopping etc. Ideally they will take their own car with them - the client will cover the cost of ferries and petrol. If this is not possible, a car will be provided for the tutor to use in the local vicinity.
When the tutor takes the boy somewhere, as part of his studies, transport will be provided or fuel costs reimbursed by the client.
Although the tutor will be provided with their own separate accommodation, they will be living in close proximity with the family and it is essential that they are able to integrate themselves to some extent.
It is anticipated that the tutor will be able to help the family with any language problems that they might have during their acclimatisation to a new country and with the building project.
