Paris/Normandy, France (FRA-0406)
This position is not currently available.
A tutor is required to teach a 6-year-old boy to read and write English, and to work with him and his younger sister (aged 3) in support of their education in school.

The family are English; they live in Paris, but have previously lived in Germany. Consequently, the boy is verbally tri-lingual, but cannot yet read or write. The family are planning to move him to a different school next year and there is a possibility that they may move back to the UK. They would therefore like the boy to be able to read and write in English. The school that he is currently attending will not teach reading or writing for another year, and then only in French.

After an initial focus on the boy’s English, the job will involve general support of his schoolwork, and working more with his younger sister.

The family have a home in Normandy where they spend July and August. The tutor will go with them and will use this opportunity to work longer hours with the boy on his English.

A tutor is required to start as soon as possible to work until the end of the summer. The tutor would then either continue for the next year or another tutor would start from the beginning of September. Applications are therefore welcome to start immediately or in September 2007.

Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Student(s)

The main student is a 6-year-old boy. He is bright and enthusiastic, and receptive to teaching. He can speak English, French and German, but cannot read or write to a satisfactory level in any language.

He very much enjoys sports, including swimming, tennis and judo. He is learning to play the piano.

He attends a local school until 16:20, (on Wednesdays he finishes at 12:00)

There is also a 3-year-old girl. She attends kindergarten in the mornings.

Role of the Tutor

The tutor will be required to teach the boy to read and write in English to an acceptable level. As he is attending school and does several after-school activities during the week, there are restrictions on the available time. There will be enough time for 1-2 hours tuition on Monday to Wednesday, and 2-3 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

The boy may go Colet Court (the preparatory school for St. Paul’s). The tutor will be required to work with him to get him up to the required standards, particularly in his written English. He will take the entrance examination in January 2008.

The tutor will help the boy with any homework that he has, where necessary. Additionally, he should be encouraged to do other extra-curricular work which will help with his English. This could take the form of investigating areas of interest to him, artwork, projects, excursions, etc.

The tutor will work with the girl in structured play in the afternoons, Monday to Wednesday, and for some time at the weekends.

The tutor will be expected to be available for some time in the evenings before the children go to bed, to help with reading and being read to, etc.

Hours and Holidays

It is expected that the tutor will be available for between 25 and 35 hours per week. The exact details of when the tutor will work will be agreed with the family, and there is some flexibility within these overall parameters.

When in Paris, the tutor will not be required to work during the mornings. They will be available for work between noon and 7pm, Monday to Wednesday. On Saturday and Sunday they will be expected to work for some of each day, though these hours are not yet defined. The tutor will be given Thursday and Friday off, in lieu of the weekend.

The detailed breakdown of the week when in Normandy has not been specified. The assumption is that the tutor will work the same number of hours per week and will have two consecutive days off. These are likely to be Saturday and Sunday.

The tutor will be entitled to 9 weeks paid holiday per year. For the initial period of the contract - until the end of August - this will be calculated on a pro-rata basis. The tutor’s holidays will be taken at a time convenient to the client and will be arranged in advance. As the main period of intensive work on the boy’s English will be done over the summer (in Normandy) the tutor will probably not take much holiday during July and August.

Other Aspects

The family live in a large apartment in central Paris within a few minutes walk of the Arc de Triomphe. The tutor will be provided with two rooms on the top floor of the same building. One room is being split into a kitchen and bathroom; the other is a combined living room/bedroom. There is a toilet down the corridor, shared by the other residents of the floor.

When the family are in Normandy, the tutor will have their own room in the house. Some building work is being planned. After this is complete, in December, the tutor will have use of a kitchen and a bathroom separate from the family. Until then, kitchen and bathroom facilities will involve a certain amount of sharing.

A car will not be provided when in Paris. In Normandy, the tutor will be given access to a car.

The tutor should have a good level of French, which is particularly important for life in Paris. They will also need to be able to help the boy with his homework, which is in French.

The family have a small dog, so the tutor should be comfortable with pets.
