Yacht: the Caribbean (YOT-1012)
This position is not currently available.
An experienced teacher is required for a three-month, full-time tutoring position. It will be based in the Caribbean aboard a large sailing yacht. The actual teaching job will start from 13 January 2013 and will conclude on 31 March 2013. Details relating to preparation time are noted below.

Students

The family will travel with two children, a boy age 7 and a girl age 10. The children get on well with each other. They are bright, cheerful and playful. It will be a pleasure to teach them.

They are both enrolled at private day schools in London, the boy in Y3, the girl in Y6. The children have a wide variety of interests and enjoy many sports, including diving and skiing. Both children are very creative, enjoy board games, reading and, are generally good at keeping themselves entertained. The family collectively have decided that the children avoid watching television apart from news or specific education programmes.

The girl’s favourite teachers expect the best from her at all times and know their subject well. While never disrespectful, she prefers teachers with a sense of humour, people who clearly love their subject but are not stuffy or over-strict, although she accepts that perhaps she can be rather a handful! The boy’s favourite teachers are kind and polite, and make learning fun.

Role of the Tutor

The position requires a highly flexible, youthful, energetic and enthusiastic teacher who has some years of experience working with children of these ages. Besides English the Tutor should preferably also speak French and/or Spanish (ideally both languages).

The children will be re-joining their classes after the Easter break in 2013. Their respective schools will provide the programme of study for all the subjects, together with the materials their classmates will be using. This represents the minimum material that the children should cover during their break from school. There is no reason for the Tutor to be limited to this. Indeed, the parents would like their children to benefit from this unique trip in every possible way and learning about the region's culture, history, geography and marine life should also form part of their curriculum. The Tutor needs the expertise to design a course of study for the children that encompasses all the avenues of opportunities that the Caribbean environment offers. It is important that the children do not think that the time spent on the yacht is any less academically important than the time they would have spent at school.

The parents have also agreed with the schools that during the trip, the Tutor and the children would stay in touch with their respective teachers and classes via the Internet. Ideally, there will be weekly communication between the schools and the Tutor about the progress of the children. Both children should write weekly blogs for their classes with the assistance of the Tutor. The Tutor will therefore need to be highly computer literate.

The Tutor will need to make preparations well in advance of the start of the trip including discussions with the children's teachers, developing an understanding of the children, designing a study course and collecting study materials from the respective schools. A week of time has been allocated for this preparation work whether this is used during December or early January. It is essential that the Tutor identifies all the necessary teaching equipment required so that it can be sourced well in advance of the boat’s departure.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor will typically work with the children for 4-5 hours a day, with preparation in addition. The timetable will need to be established with reference to the sailing itinerary and planned destinations. As far as possible a consistent pattern should be established, with periods of formal classroom study as well as activity-based learning.

The Tutor will be entitled to an average of two consecutive days off per week, but should not expect these to occur at weekends or to be regular in their timing. As far as possible the Client will try to give the Tutor at least a week’s notice of when their ‘weekend’ break will be, but the Tutor will need to understand this may not always be possible.

He/she is also entitled to a one week paid holiday in mid-February during the UK half-term break. If the Tutor wishes to return to their home during this week, his/her travel expenses will be paid.

The family is responsible for the Tutor’s expenses for all travel to and from the yacht, and for all expenses aboard the yacht and during any work-related shore visits. Whilst there is not a necessity on this assignment for a car to be provided by the Client, there may be one available for some of the shore trips by prior arrangement with the Client. A driving licence would therefore be useful.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous

The Tutor will have his/her own private cabin on board (likely to be the second best cabin!).

The successful candidate should be fit and healthy, a non-smoker who is comfortable with life on a yacht. The family is very private, and the Tutor will be expected to maintain complete confidentiality both during and after his/her appointment.
