Student
Unfortunately, the student was the victim of some pretty awful bullying and this resulted in some periods off school and in changing of sets. The resultant disruption meant that he missed parts of his schooling at a critical time and is thus not quite on course to achieve the range of A* grades that his work effort and ability deserve. The immediate tutoring is therefore to help bridge these gaps and get him fully prepped for his exams. He is also considering homeschooling for his A levels and is hoping that the experience of this GCSE prep at home will help him more fully understand whether homeschooling full time might suit his learning style better than traditional schooling.
Role of the Tutor
Given the student’s subject range and ambitions, it is obvious that the Tutor will need to be the kind of person who excelled at school. It is likely that the successful candidate attended a top-flight private school, achieved mostly top grades across a similar or greater number of GCSEs (or O levels) than the student, and graduated from one the top British universities. The appointed Tutor will likely be an Oxbridge graduate who has a proven track record of getting excellent results from their charges.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutor will need to be flexible about when the tutoring takes place, especially after the Easter break and once the exams start. The student will remain enrolled at his school and will attend revision classes there in addition to time spent with the Tutor in the evenings, during periods of study leave, and at weekends. The Tutor should also bear in mind that the student will need periods of rest and recreational activity included in this intensive revision arrangement to maintain good health.
In addition to the time the student spends working with his Tutor, the Tutor should expect him to be able to study by himself on topics set out by the Tutor, either for learning rote material or practicing a particular math problem type. Wherever possible, the Tutor will not set busy work, work just used to fill up time. Although the work needs to be intensive, it should also be fun, and where opportunities exist to support the learning material by experiments at home or by excursions or watching a film etc, the Tutor should feel free to incorporate these into the revision program.
If the Tutor is asked to accompany the Client on any travel, the Client will be responsible for all the Tutor’s travel expenses and accommodation arrangements, but not his or her food or personal telephone usage. The family have a home in Spain and it is likely that some of the placement will be based there.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
The Client also has a home in Spain and it is likely that some of the tutoring time will be based there too. The accommodation in Spain is a furnished three-bedroom apartment — offering plenty of space for the tutoring. In Spain the Client will provide a car for the Tutor’s personal, local use.
