Canterbury (CAN-0213)
This position is not currently available.
A broadly capable educator is required from Easter 2013 for 12 weeks until the end of the GCSE exams this summer. The role involves intensive homeschooling with an able young man who attends a good local private day school. Due to circumstances beyond the student’s control, events at the school conspired to cause the student to miss some parts of the syllabus and these resulting gaps are now affecting his overall preparation for his summer exams.

Student

The student is a bright and engaging young man, mature above his years in his deportment and conversational style. He is thoughtful and realistic, and should be capable of the top grades in all he undertakes. The student is academically ambitious, preferring Maths and the Physical Sciences, and certainly has the attitude and aptitude to achieve his lofty goals. Before he can get started on his A levels, studying the subjects he really loves, he first has to do well in his summer GCSEs.

Unfortunately, the student was the victim of some pretty awful bullying and this resulted in some periods off school and in changing of sets. The resultant disruption meant that he missed parts of his schooling at a critical time and is thus not quite on course to achieve the range of A* grades that his work effort and ability deserve. The immediate tutoring is therefore to help bridge these gaps and get him fully prepped for his exams. He is also considering homeschooling for his A levels and is hoping that the experience of this GCSE prep at home will help him more fully understand whether homeschooling full time might suit his learning style better than traditional schooling.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor’s role is to help the student to prepare fully for all his summer GCSEs: Maths, Further Maths (FSMQ), English Literature, English Language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry (separate), History, Spanish, French, and Latin. As previously mentioned, the student has missed some parts of the teaching of some of these subjects, and his recent mock exams showed that the areas needing the most improvement are History, English, and Latin. In particular, the student needs a lot of work on his Latin Literature. His other subjects all scored high Bs or As and so while these seem to be on track it is none the less important for the Tutor to ensure that these subjects are sound too.

Given the student’s subject range and ambitions, it is obvious that the Tutor will need to be the kind of person who excelled at school. It is likely that the successful candidate attended a top-flight private school, achieved mostly top grades across a similar or greater number of GCSEs (or O levels) than the student, and graduated from one the top British universities. The appointed Tutor will likely be an Oxbridge graduate who has a proven track record of getting excellent results from their charges.

Hours, Holidays, and Travel

The Tutor will normally expect to work with the student for a maximum of 8-10 hours a day, with suitable breaks, starting from Monday, March 25th until the day before his final exam on June 19th. This total period is 12 weeks. The Tutor will be entitled to an average of one day off per week, (probably taken midweek) but no other vacation entitlement accrues on this contract.

The Tutor will need to be flexible about when the tutoring takes place, especially after the Easter break and once the exams start. The student will remain enrolled at his school and will attend revision classes there in addition to time spent with the Tutor in the evenings, during periods of study leave, and at weekends. The Tutor should also bear in mind that the student will need periods of rest and recreational activity included in this intensive revision arrangement to maintain good health.

In addition to the time the student spends working with his Tutor, the Tutor should expect him to be able to study by himself on topics set out by the Tutor, either for learning rote material or practicing a particular math problem type. Wherever possible, the Tutor will not set busy work, work just used to fill up time. Although the work needs to be intensive, it should also be fun, and where opportunities exist to support the learning material by experiments at home or by excursions or watching a film etc, the Tutor should feel free to incorporate these into the revision program.

If the Tutor is asked to accompany the Client on any travel, the Client will be responsible for all the Tutor’s travel expenses and accommodation arrangements, but not his or her food or personal telephone usage. The family have a home in Spain and it is likely that some of the placement will be based there.

Accommodation and Miscellaneous

A well-appointed two-bedroom apartment is provided for the Tutor in Canterbury. This accommodation is quiet and private, and is suitable for a couple. Tutoring while in Canterbury will be in a second apartment within the same development.

The Client also has a home in Spain and it is likely that some of the tutoring time will be based there too. The accommodation in Spain is a furnished three-bedroom apartment — offering plenty of space for the tutoring. In Spain the Client will provide a car for the Tutor’s personal, local use.
