Istanbul, Turkey (IST-0313)
This position is not currently available.
A broadly capable British or American educator is required for May and June 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey. The role involves working after school predominantly with the eldest child. The student is applying to a school in Oxford from September 2013; acceptance at the school will be largely on the basis of the student’s performance in an assessment examination at the end of June. The exact requirements of this assessment are not currently known, but it is likely to be broadly in line with the Common Entrance.
Application deadline: Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Students

The boy is a bright and engaging young man from a good family. He is polite and charming. While his English is currently limiting his expression, it is clear that he has a good understanding of current affairs and is academically strong, particularly in Maths and Science. If he is going to be able to get into a suitable school and then be able to handle the continued learning in English, his familiarity with the language and the specific way in which it is used in British schools will need intensive development.

He has two siblings, a boy and girl, both 10. They will also be moving to school in the England from September 2013, and they too will need to improve their English in order to cope with a new school. The girl has much better English than her brother.

Role of the Tutor

The elder boy currently attends perhaps the best private school in Istanbul, but he will be moving to England with his family and will be attending a British school from the start of the new school year. In order to ensure that he is accepted into the school, and to make it easier for him to survive once the new academic year commences, he will receive a period of intensive tutoring after school and at weekends throughout May and June 2013.

The boy is good at Maths and Science, but is far from fluent in English. He doesn't really like the subject! The intensive tutoring will help him to develop his language skills in spoken, written and reading English, as well as its application to working in English in the core subjects of a good private school.

The younger two children should also be given support by the Tutor, but their needs are less urgent at this critical stage.

Hours, Holidays, and Accommodation

The Tutor will normally expect to work with the children every afternoon and evening after school Monday-Thursday, and on either Saturday or Sunday. On weekdays the Tutor should expect to start work at 3pm at the earliest and to finish around 10pm. At the weekend, the Tutor will be expected to work for about 8-10 hours, at times suitable to the Client. The weekly tutoring hours should rarely exceed forty.

Over the duration of the contract, one week’s paid holiday will accrue. If there is not a suitable time to take this during May or June, the Tutor will be entitled to an extra week’s drawings instead.

The Client will arrange accommodation for the Tutor for the duration of this assignment. It is not known yet whether this will be a separate apartment or live-in at the Client’s home. If the former, then the Client will be responsible for all utilities for the apartment except the use of phone for the Tutor’s personal calls. The Tutor would be responsible for all meals except those that might occur during tutoring time. If live-in, then meals will also be provided by the Client.

Travel and Miscellaneous

If the Tutor is asked to accompany the Client on any travel, the Client will be responsible for all the Tutor’s travel expenses and accommodation arrangements, but not his or her food or personal telephone usage.

A car will not be available for the Tutor’s own use. If transport is required as part of the job then the Client will ensure suitable arrangements are made.
