London, W5 (EAL-0513)
This position is not currently available.
A patient and calm Tutor is sought to work part-time with one boy. The position starts immediately (at the earliest), breaks over the summer vacation period, and continues from September 2013. It will likely last until the boy is at least 13.

Student

The student is 11 and will be 12 in January 2014. He will be going into Y7 in September 2013 and is currently enrolled at a very good private day school in Ealing. This school is a feeder school to some of the best London schools, especially St Paul's. His parents are not looking to pressure their son unduly, but they would like him to maximise his potential and they feel that the extra support in some key subject areas for a couple of hours a day after school and on occasional Sundays will allow the boy to flourish.

The student is a bright young man who has a variety of sports and interests. He is academically strong and rarely needs to be told more than once how to do something. He enjoys reading, and his current preference is for fiction. Good as he is at learning new skills, these can soon be forgotten without regular practice and application and it is this that is the focus of the role.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will work with the student after school from 6pm, typically, for up to 2-3 hours, 4 nights per week. Typically this will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; if the Tutor can accommodate some flexibility that will be most helpful. There may also be the occasional Sunday request if he has a lot of work on, or is preparing for exams. This work will be centred on enhancing his facility in three key subjects: Maths, English and French.

In English, he needs the most help with securing his spelling and improving his creative story writing as he lacks confidence in this area. In Maths, the focus should be in mental arithmetic and oral word problems. Although recent tutoring has improved speed on timed tests there remains a concern that he does not achieve his potential due to not finishing the papers in the allotted time. His French learning has improved dramatically over the last year and he now enjoys the subject. He has an exceptional memory and this is incredibly beneficial when learning new vocabulary.

These areas are, of course, just the immediate focus. It is likely that has the tutoring progresses the Tutor and the student's parents will both identify other areas that could benefit from the Tutor's support.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor should expect to work up 10-12 hours per week Monday-Friday (not Wednesdays). On weekdays that Tutor should expect to start around 6pm. If the Tutor is needed at weekends this will be arranged during the preceding week directly between the Tutor and family. The Tutor will need to be flexible about the timing in the evenings because the student's extracurricular sports commitments may affect the plans from time to time.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

No accommodation is provided for the position.

The Client will be responsible for all costs relating to the Tutor's travel. If this involves driving, the Tutor will be reimbursed at 40p per mile, and parking charges (not penalties) will be covered. If travel involves public transport the Client will reimburse the Tutor for a season ticket covering the requisite London zones.

The Tutor should be a non-smoker.
