West of London (WL-0606)
This position is not currently available.
Our client is relocating to the area west of London, near the M25 - they will likely buy a house in Surrey, east Berks, east Bucks or south Herts.

They require a tutor for their son, aged 6, who has been assessed with some kind of behavioural difficulty, possibly ASD. Although the boy may go to a specialist school at some point, the current plan is for home-schooling.

Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Student

The boy is potentially bright, but is often frustrated by the limitations of his age. He has an active imagination though sometimes has problems with real world connections.

He is somewhat shy and his social development will need particular attention from the tutor. He occasionally loses his temper but is always very contrite and apologetic afterwards. For most of the time he is actually quite a sweet child.

He enjoys physical activities such as swimming and trampolining.

Role of the Tutor

An overall program is being organised to support the boy’s needs, overseen by a consultant behavioural psychologist. The tutor will liaise with the consultant to ensure that the tutoring is carried forward to support the overall plan.

We are looking for someone with professional experience in Special Educational Needs. The tutor will be the primary influence on the boy - any other specialists will only be involved for the occasional half-day.

The tutor must be capable of organising and implementing a full homeschooling program as well as providing emotional support and encouragement. In addition to teaching the boy, an important part of the job will be fun activities and play-learning. The tutor will be responsible for specifying and ordering any books, materials and other resources - the client will meet all such expenses.

Hours and Holidays

This is a full-time post of 30+ hours per week. The current work pattern consists of three short sessions a day, but this is open to change. The tutor will be provided with lunch by the family.

The tutor will usually take the weekend off, but some flexibility in this area should be expected. It would not be unreasonable for the tutor to work 5½ days a week, assuming that the boy himself is comfortable with this.

The tutor will receive 9 weeks paid holiday per annum.

The tutor may be called upon to travel with family, and continue looking after the boy’s educational needs during such trips. In these instances the client will cover all expenses.

Other Factors

The tutor will be provided with self-contained accommodation within the grounds of the family estate. For a tutor already based in West London - who could potentially commute - alternative arrangements are possible.

A car will be available for use during working hours, if required.

The family is very keen on health and fitness and will insist on a non-smoker. The family have dogs (and also horses) so the tutor should be comfortable around animals.
