Students
He is an extremely polite young man, able to describe his thoughts about his own education in an unusually mature and measured manner. A recent trial period at Ampleforth School has illuminated the extent of the differences in the systems and even at this relatively early stage he can see that if he is to be able to compete on a world stage rather than his immediate locale he needs to have a much broader perspective and be much more knowledgeable across the whole subject range than his current school with its large classes and fixed curricula provide.
He had a Tutor last year that certainly became a good friend and was well liked by everyone, but he was not academically strong and was unable to take him beyond what was covered at school. This time he would like a Tutor who is kind and personable, someone he is proud to involve in activities with his friends and who he enjoys spending time with, but who expects more and who can offer the framework to reach these higher expectations. His new Tutor will need to be able to fire his academic interests through engaging after school activities that are not limited to ensuring that the schoolwork is completed, but which goes well beyond that to ensure that he is fully prepared to excel in his Common Entrance exams or specific school entrance exams in due course.
Although comfortable in spoken English and fluent in Italian, his English vocabulary and usage in reading and writing are not currently at the level needed to make a successful school application or to thrive if successful.
His sister, age 4, is a pleasant little girl who has just started nursery. The main focus of her tutoring will be English, though the Tutor should use this opportunity to sow the seeds needed for a love of all subjects and a passion for learning.
Role of the Tutor
Although the main focus of this assignment is the boy, the Tutor is also expected to spend time with his sister. This can easily be done during the hours when he is at school. The Tutor should look to expand her knowledge and command of English as much as possible while she is not attending nursery and work on encouraging her confidence in the spoken language.
The family have had a Tutor in the past. Their previous Tutor, while a very nice individual, was not academically minded, and did not have the experience or knowledge to be able to push either child in anything other than conversational English language. The family is looking to rectify this, and hopes to find a Tutor who is academically gifted, charismatic, and passionate about learning.
The Tutor should be eloquent, able to explain concepts simply and able to inspire the children with his enthusiasm for any given subject. He should have a wide knowledge base and a range of interests that they can share with the family. A passion for music or the sciences, for example, would help to inspire the student and inject a spark of energy into the boy's work. The Tutor should be a natural communicator with a kind and caring disposition, and a firm-but-fair approach to his work.
As the Tutor is expected to support him with his studies in the Italian school (except Italian), a grasp of Italian is essential for the Tutor to understand workbooks and instructions from the teachers. Additional languages will also be looked on favourably - especially French.
The Tutor will need to create a formal programme of study and weekly timetable that ensures the student will be well prepared for his Italian school (where high performance needs to move to the very top tier), his entry exams for the British schools, and the transition between the Italian and English school curricula. The Tutor should not create a high-pressure environment, but equally should not be afraid to push his charges to achieve their potential. He or she should create a productive atmosphere, one rich with discourse and dialogue that nurtures the development of inquiring and curious young people.
Arezzo is only 60 km from Florence, which means that integrating visits to museums, art galleries, sites of historical or anthropological interest should be considered. Equally, opportunities for developing skills in sports such as rugby and tennis and to ensure the boy is fit and maintains a healthy and active lifestyle are also to be taken were possible. He is learning the drums, and this too offers a creative Tutor room for development.
The Tutor will teach in a designated room at the home in Arezzo, and of course during any period where the Tutor and student are together when traveling to/from activities or during occasions where the Tutor might organise interesting events for the boy and his friends to participate in together. The Tutor will be responsible for recommending the resources he needs.
Although there are not yet any firm plans, it could be that this role will have periods of homeschooling and travel, predominantly to Dubai, where the childrens' father lives. These periods would offer the Tutor tremendous opportunity for making rapid progress beyond the scope of the school in Arezzo. If there are periods in Dubai the Tutor will be expected to escort the children from/to Arezzo and to teach them in Dubai.
Hours, Holidays, and Travel
The Tutor is entitled to a minimum annual 45 working days paid vacation as per the Terms.
The Client will be responsible Tutor's full expenses arising from any travel required for the position throughout the contract term. However, it is unlikely that this contract will involve a large amount of travel, so the Tutor should not expect to be away from Arezzo for more than a few weeks at a time.
Accommodation and Miscellaneous
In Arezzo a car will be made available for the Tutor. The Tutor is responsible for keeping this car clean, for all fuel costs for personal use, and for any damage to the car not covered by the insurance. All other costs for the car are the Client's responsibility as per the Terms.
In Dubai accommodation will either be in the father's home or a nearby hotel.
The children live with their mother in Arezzo, Italy. Their father lives in Dubai and visits Arezzo frequently. The Tutor must be sensitive to the arrangement between the estranged parties - he should be polite and diplomatic at all times and should ensure that the relationship between the parents does not affect the work with the children.
The Tutor should be a non-smoker, lead a physically active lifestyle, and be healthy and fit. He should be engaging, have a good sense of humour and have an affable and warm disposition.
