Student and Subjects
The tutor will need to liaise closely with the boy’s school, to ensure that he remains up to date with his top-set peers, across his entire GCSE course. Subjects include Maths, Science (Double Award), Geography, History (or Latin), English Literature and English Language, Spanish and French.
The ideal tutor will be able to deliver all of these subjects, but applications are invited from candidates who can cover most of them – a local tutor may be found in Montreal to deliver those not covered by the UK tutor. The student will be re-entering school in January and needs to be up to date with his class.
Flexible schedule
It is rarely known in advance when these lessons will take place. The tutor will therefore need to be extremely flexible, ready at short notice, with plenty of work always prepared in case there is a long break. This position involves a significant amount of hanging around. The tutor should not leave the set - even when it appears there’s no opportunity for teaching - in case the situation changes. The position will therefore be ideal for someone who has their own personal interests that benefit from plenty of free time, such as writing or research.
A typical day might start at 7am and end at 7pm, 9 hours of which will be on set. There may be some days when there is no teaching at all, and weeks where there is time for a great deal more. The tutor will need to be highly organised to manage all school subjects in such a flexible situation. It is essential that he or she has a sense of humour, and is able to roll with the frequent and unpredictable changes demanded when filming a major motion picture.
Teaching, Liaison, Classroom
With the time difference between London and the Montreal, the tutor will also need to be patient and thorough in communication with the school and teachers. Materials will largely be prepared by the school and sent to the tutor, online or by mail. The boy will need to turn in some key assignments during the term.
The teaching will take place in a dedicated school-room on the set. Internet access is available, (unless the location is too remote on a given day). Any resources required by the tutor must be pre-approved by the film company. At weekends, and if the filming allows, field trips to sites of interest may well be possible.
Hours, Accommodation, Travel
There will be two days off in every seven days, although it is often not known until each week what days these will be. There is no additional holiday entitlement during this short-term contract.
The tutor will be provided with hotel accommodation or a furnished studio apartment for the duration of the contract. While on the film set, all meals will be provided.
The tutor will be provided with a business-class return ticket from the UK to Montreal. The tutor will have access to a driver for travel to and from the set, and for local errands.
