Jalisco, Mexico (MEX-0706)
This position is not currently available.
A tutor is required to work with the 12-year-old daughter of our client in western Mexico. From September 2006, the girl will be enrolled in a UK independent school, but will spend the middle term in Jalisco with her family. A tutor is required to cover this term, from January to April 2007.
Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Student

The girl has been mainly home-schooled, following the French curriculum, with only the occasional term spent in a school. This variable educational history makes it a little unclear how academic she is, but the signs are that whatever she puts her mind to is soon accomplished.

As is often the case with home-educated young people, the girl is mature and self-assured for her age, knows her own mind, is gregarious and makes friends easily.

She is interested in arts and crafts, music (guitar, and to a lesser degree piano), movies, horse riding and tennis. It would be an advantage if the tutor shared some of these interests.

Teaching

The tutor will need to keep the girl abreast of her peers back in the UK. This will require close liaison with the school and the teachers. A member of the school staff will be assigned to work with the tutor, and weekly tasks and course materials will be provided. Some assignments will need be completed and returned to the school, for assessment, during the term.

The girl will be sitting her Common Entrance examination at the end of the academic year, and the tutor will need to work on exam technique through practice exams and past papers.

Subjects

Of particular importance is the need to work on the girl’s weaker subjects of History, Geography, Science, English and Maths. These present the biggest challenge since she has relatively little experience in these areas. (Particular weak topics have been identified such as the Tudors and Stuarts, map skills and physical geography).

The student is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian. A tutor who can maintain some of these languages will be preferred. However, the language of instruction will be English, in which the girl needs to develop a more mature writing style.

Other factors

This is a full time position, around 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday. A school day will need to be established that allows for instruction across all subjects and also fits around the girl’s recreational schedule. Some time for independent study should be arranged, but there is no need for ‘homework’ to be set.

The client will provide accommodation in a lovely casita in the grounds of their home. All meals will be provided. There are a variety of sporting facilities available and it is likely that the tutor will have the opportunity to use these.

The tutor’s first outward and final return travel, together with all airport transfers, will be covered by the client. A car will also be available for the use of the tutor during the assignment.

The client feels this position is more suitable for a female teacher.
