Stamford, CT (OSB-0614.1S)
This position is not currently available.
An able and experienced British educator is required for a summer assignment. This role starts as soon as possible and preference will be given to candidates who could continue on to December 2014.

The position is with an American family that live in Connecticut but travel frequently for work. The role involves tutoring two boys, ages 5 and 7, across the full curriculum. The intention is that the children will be home-schooled until they are at least 16 years old.

The family moved out of New York City so that the children would be in a better physical and educational environment, with more freedom to run around and less city stress. They are currently in rented accommodation while they look for a suitable property to purchase.

The parents’ work involves significant amounts of travel, generally within the USA, but potentially to other countries such as Spain. The children travel with them and the intention is that the Tutor will accompany them to continue their education during all periods of travel.

Students

There are two children, boys of age 7 and 5. They are bright, engaging and attentive young boys. They have had a Tutor in the past, but she had to leave due to a change in her personal circumstances and, after a short spell where the boys’ parents tried to homeschool them, they have decided that it will be healthier for everyone for a new Tutor to be engaged.

Like other healthy children of their age, they have plenty of energy. This means that the tutoring will need to be interesting enough to capture the boys’ attention and, at least for the first few years, need to be rich with activity based learning and enrichment to develop mind and body.

The 5-year-old is the more sporty of the two boys. He is quiet, preferring to watch and listen to what is happening than to try to be the centre of attention conversationally. It may not look like it at times, but he is paying attention and can contribute to conversation when prompted. He would like to take part in more creative activities like his older brother but, because of the age difference and him being less able in this area, it is hard for him to compete with his older brother.

The 7-year-old is creative and artistic. He is happy ‘performing’ in front of strangers and he engages quickly in spirited conversation. He is quite mature for a 7 year old, although there are times when he prefers not to show it. He would like to be better at sports than he is, but he isn’t as good as his younger brother and can find this annoying. He is gregarious and outgoing and looking forward to getting started with a very good Tutor.

Academically, the boys are more or less on track relative to the US system, but his parents are seeking a more international feel to their children’s education by changing to a good quality British curriculum. Compared to the British system, the 7-year-old might be considered to be a little behind with numeracy and literacy, but it is hard to make direct comparisons at this age and the Tutor will need to make his or her own assessments once they start working with the children.

Role of the Tutor

This position requires a youthful, energetic, enthusiastic and interesting teacher who has experience working with children of these ages within the relevant key stages of the British education system.

The Tutor will be responsible for devising a rich curriculum, including educational trips and other stimulating activities as appropriate. The importance of formal lesson-based education is recognised, but this should not be the primary mode of teaching.

In any role where there are two students separated in age by two academic years, it is easy for the Tutor to pitch to the mid-level. While this would be good for the younger student, it is not ideal for the older one. It is therefore essential that the Tutor ensures that the timetable includes one-on-one time for both students; during these periods the other child will be looked after by a nanny. The Tutor will be responsible for providing the nanny with learning-relevant activities during these times, so that the boys education is full time and consistent among those staff responsible for the care of the children.

The Tutor should be able to teach a foreign language. Spanish is preferred, but French would be a suitable alternative. The possibility of teaching Early Years Latin would also be welcomed.

The Tutor must be organised, self-reliant, and independent. This role requires a Tutor who is highly flexible and able to adapt their plans to changes at short notice. He or she will need to develop a curriculum and resources that are truly portable and will be responsible for ensuring that all the required materials are transported as required. The family frequently and often need to alter their plans for the duration of a stay in any location. Not only will the Tutor have to teach in temporary locations, such as hotel rooms, but he or she will need to be able to adapt their plans to take the frequent movements into account as well as being resourceful and easygoing to manage the constraints and opportunities that this will bring.

The Tutor must be a bright, fun, intellectual teacher that will allow the children’s free spirit to grow, whilst at the same time being firm enough to ensure that appropriate boundaries are set and maintained. They will be responsible for establishing a reward system for the children to incentivise good behaviour. This could be perhaps be based around weekly ‘golden time’ or similar.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor will typically work with the boys for about eight hours a day for five days a week, with preparation in addition. The contact time will be split between one-on-one time with each of the boys and time with them together. When the boys are not with the Tutor they will be looked after by their nanny.

The Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week. These will normally be at the weekends.

There will be no holiday entitlement within this contract unless it extends past the end of August, in which case normal pro rated vacation will accrue from September 1st.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

The Tutor will be provided with a one-bedroom apartment, separate from the Client’s accommodation but in the same development. Apart from the Tutor’s personal telephone use, the Client will cover all bills on this apartment.

Tutoring will take place in a separate space provided by the clients. In the rented accommodation a room will be set aside for tutoring, and when the family relocate to their new home they will likely build a state of the art teaching suite, likely including space for a science lab, music room etc.

The Clients are in the process of moving to a new house.

”¨The Client will make a car available for the Tutor’s use in all locations.

The Tutor must be fit and healthy, and a non-smoker.
