This is a long-term position, and it is hoped that the same tutor will be available for several years. The position commences in late August 2006, but if the right tutor cannot begin until January or February 2007, an interim tutor will be required to bridge the gap. Applications are invited from teachers interested in either the short-term position (covering the first semester) or the long-term position.
Student
This change of school is likely to present a number of challenges for the boy. His current school has very small classes and a great deal of allowance is made for each student’s particular requirements. In addition, he has been following the UK National Curriculum. The American school he will be moving to will expect him to keep up, and will treat him the same as all the other students in a much larger class. Together with learning to manage the cut-and-thrust of a larger school, he will have to adapt quickly to the contrasting approaches the US curriculum demands of students. It is therefore essential that the tutor has recent experience of working with the US system and can appreciate the differences involved.
Role of the Tutor
In addition to his schoolwork, the boy will continue to receive special therapies, and the tutor should be able to offer some support for this program. For example, it is essential that the boy read aloud for at least twenty minutes daily, and he has a computer-based programme that he does at least once per day.
On days when homework is light, or on occasions where the opportunity presents itself, the tutor should enjoy taking the boy outdoors to play/learn or just to play - he enjoys football and basketball. The tutor should also organise visits to museums, art galleries, and sites of interest.
There is an older sister (aged 14), who may also seek advice from the tutor about her work during the evening. She is artistic and creative, and does well in school.
Hours and Holidays
Holiday entitlement will be in keeping with our normal Terms of Business, ie. 9 weeks paid holiday per year. If two candidates fill the position, the short-term tutor will get school holidays but there will not be any additional vacation time.
There may be occasions when the tutor is asked to accompany the family on vacation; in such circumstances the client will cover all the tutor’s expenses.
Other Aspects
Travel - The client will reimburse the tutor the cost of an annual season ticket for public transport. Travel at 40p per mile will be reimbursed if the tutor prefers to use his own car. In addition, the client can make a car available to the tutor for local excursions with the boy. The tutor should have a full clean driving licence.
Evening meal - Meals occurring during tutoring time will be taken with the family
Miscellaneous - This position would suit a teacher who is fit and sporty, with a happy and pleasant demeanour. The tutor should be a non-smoker.
