A compassionate and able tutor with experience of the US system is required to help a 15-year-old girl to achieve her potential despite a traumatic experience that has dented her confidence and adversely affected her core learning skills.

Student

The student is 15 years old and is currently in 10th Grade at an American school in the UK. She was physically assaulted about three years ago and severely traumatised. Following the incident, she was off school for six months with depression and anxiety. She still suffers some after-effects, but these are very much reduced. Unfortunately, this break from schooling and the time it has taken to recover, allied with a change from the UK to the US school system, has left her without having learned how to apply many of the skills of learning that are expected from children of her age. With the exception of art, in which she is earning top grades, her GPA in her other courses is rather lacklustre, and it is the wish to fill the gaps in the learning process and the consequential uncertain mastery of some subjects that has led to this tutoring role.

The student is a charming and engaging young woman with a lovely demeanour and warm sense of humour. She is evidently bright and, with the right support, should be able to achieve her academic ambition to attend a college in the US where she can study art and education with a view to becoming an art teacher. To achieve this, she will need to improve her GPA and to achieve the required SAT score, as well as make a good impression in her College applications.

Role of the Tutor

Before the attack, she was a good, if immature, student. She is now underachieving in most subjects. She needs help with re-learning her basic background knowledge, how to do homework, how to study effectively, and related skills of organizing a study schedule and making best use of the time she has. The Tutor will be responsible for determining how best to achieve this, and then for developing and delivering a suitable programme of study.

The Tutor will be available to the Client on a full time basis so that the student can potentially be tutored after school, during free periods at school, or with her Tutor instead of her regular schoolteachers in some classes. Obviously, any incursions into the usual school operations will require the school’s full prior agreement. There may also be opportunities to consolidate some of the timetable at school to leave a whole day free for tutoring, and, on some days, the student may opt to study with the Tutor instead of going into school. Obviously, this need for flexibility means that the Tutor will need to be helpful and accommodating, and very well organised, in order to maximise the amount of support that the student gets while not becoming overburdened.

The intention is for the student to graduate high school on schedule, rather than being held back a year. At the moment, she is nowhere near ready to take her SAT, but this should be included in the planning, along with College applications.

It is not known at this stage what courses she will take next year, but it is likely that she will either continue French or replace this with German. Obviously, such decisions will be made before the assignment starts, but the Tutor should anticipate that the usual course requirements of Junior and Senior year in any US school will be in place.

Hours, Holidays, and Accommodation

The Tutor will be available to the student as needed for up to an average of 40 hours contact time per week.

The Tutor will be entitled to 45 working days paid vacation per annum at times convenient to the Client. Any untaken vacation allowance that has accrued will be compensated by payment in lieu at the below rate.

A self-contained studio apartment is available for the Tutor in the family home. This does not have its own independent access, but even so, the Tutor should be a light footprint in the house rather than feeling free to use the family’s public spaces. The Tutor will be able to use the main kitchen but will not ordinarily eat with the family. If needed, a car can be made available for the Tutor’s reasonable local use.

If the Tutor chooses to live out, then she will be responsible for her own accommodation arrangements and transport.

Travel and Miscellaneous

If the Client wishes the Tutor to accompany the student on any travels, the Client will be responsible for the Tutor’s travel and accommodation during such periods of travel. Travel time itself does not constitute part of the Tutor’s work time or her paid vacation entitlement.

The Tutor must be fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
