Student
Like many young men of his age who have had unsatisfying school experiences, he displays some apathy towards academia in general, and a reluctance to try anything too hard in case he fails. This attitude has been taken through to his personal life where, for example, although a self-confessed motor-head, he has never taken apart an engine or restored an old vehicle, or even made any modifications to his own cars.
The student has a certain amount of business nous. His mother is a successful entrepreneur, and he shares many of her traits. It is clear that over the years, the family have discussed business issues around the dinner table, so he is well versed in economic and business practice, albeit at an introductory, observational level. Like his mother, he is interested in computer science and programming. However, he lacks the basic mathematical skills to be a successful programmer. He is a bit of an actor, but has never been on stage, which is a shame. He sings a little, but cannot read music and doesn't play any instruments. At least not yet!
The student will be a pleasure for a capable educator to work with. The current plan is to complete A level or equivalent studies through home schooling, with a view to studying Business at a British university in September 2017. It is expected that this plan may change once the tutoring starts and his real abilities and ambitions emerge.
Role of the Tutor
Although the success of the role will be measured mostly by whether the student goes on to University, the job is as much about rebuilding his confidence as it is about increasing his subject knowledge and general abilities. The Tutor will need to be patient and firm in equal measures, with an infectious enthusiasm for many subjects and a deep knowledge of his preferred subject areas. The Tutor must be able to assess the student's current level, discover where there are gaps in his knowledge and address each of his weak areas. He will need solid academic foundations if he is to succeed at A level and gain a place at the university of his choice. His overall study techniques are somewhat lacking, and the Tutor should be prepared to help him to learn tricks to help manage his attention and focus, improve his academic writing and structure his notes properly. Additional techniques to help his memory, organisation skills and reading strategies will be important.
Although academic in focus, this role is an excellent opportunity for an educator to think outside the box. The student has not responded well to traditional methods of schooling, so a new approach is needed. The Tutor must devise and implement a timetable that ensures a thorough understanding of all of the material in the entire syllabi of all target subjects, allows for constant revision of the material covered, and includes thorough exam preparation. The timetable should be interesting and varied, and the Tutor should be inspiring and enthusiastic.
Hours, Holidays, and Accommodation
The Tutor is entitled to a minimum of 45 days holiday per annum.
Accommodation is provided for the Tutor in the family's home in Jersey. A car will be available for the Tutor's reasonable local use.
Travel and Miscellaneous
If a car is needed for the Tutor, one will be rented as needed in each location. Where public transport is excellent and a car either unnecessary or inadvisable, the Client will reimburse the Tutor for the use of public transport.
The Tutor should be a non-smoker, lead a physically active lifestyle, and be healthy and fit. He or she should be engaging, have a good sense of humour and a sunny disposition. Naturally, he or she is expected to be an excellent tutor and at the same time an inspiring mentor for the positive as well as progressive development of the student's academic career.
