Jersey (JER-0215 LT)
This position is not currently available.
A patient, supportive, and experienced teacher is required as full time private Tutor to fill a long-term vacancy commencing September 2015 (or perhaps during the summer vacation period). There is one student, an 18 year-old boy, who has had a series of unkind school experiences and is currently struggling with A levels. The Tutor must help to rebuild confidence, find and plug any gaps and help the young man prepare for a successful university application. This role is likely to have significant elements of travel, and to include non-classroom based learning in a range of environments from outdoor, survivalist to museums, art galleries and other excursions. Subjects include English Language and English Literature, Media Studies and Geography. The Tutor will need to be well versed in additional subjects such as History, Business Studies and Psychology, and be able to help with university applications when the time comes. The role is based in Jersey.

Student

The student is a lovely, polite young man who has experienced a challenging school environment in the past, and has now lost his way with academia. His is articulate, friendly and has a great sense of fun and humour. His seemingly easy manners have, up to a point, served him well in his school life where he achieved a range of B-C grades at GCSE. Once he started his at A levels though, significant gaps in his understanding have emerged, and his self-image and confidence have been badly shaken. He has displayed learning differences throughout his schooling, and has been diagnosed as suffering from dyscalculia, although that is no longer thought to be relevant. He was not properly supported at school - under-trained staff and issues with school governance allowed him to get behind without being noticed and without remedial action being offered. As a result, after two years of poor teaching, his pre-GCSE level knowledge is now shaky, which makes for very weak foundations for study at A level.

Like many young men of his age who have had unsatisfying school experiences, he displays some apathy towards academia in general, and a reluctance to try anything too hard in case he fails. This attitude has been taken through to his personal life where, for example, although a self-confessed motor-head, he has never taken apart an engine or restored an old vehicle, or even made any modifications to his own cars.

The student has a certain amount of business nous. His mother is a successful entrepreneur, and he shares many of her traits. It is clear that over the years, the family have discussed business issues around the dinner table, so he is well versed in economic and business practice, albeit at an introductory, observational level. Like his mother, he is interested in computer science and programming. However, he lacks the basic mathematical skills to be a successful programmer. He is a bit of an actor, but has never been on stage, which is a shame. He sings a little, but cannot read music and doesn't play any instruments. At least not yet!

The student will be a pleasure for a capable educator to work with. The current plan is to complete A level or equivalent studies through home schooling, with a view to studying Business at a British university in September 2017. It is expected that this plan may change once the tutoring starts and his real abilities and ambitions emerge.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will need to be able to deliver work with the student and his family, and with Tutors International, to establish a clear understanding of his present level across different subjects and to map out a likely pathway that will enable him to make a successful application to a University to study something related to business. It is important that this educational plan be sufficiently fixed so as to provide a structure while at the same remaining flexible enough to allow for change as his confidence and ability return. At present, he is studying A levels in English Literature, English Language, Media Studies and Geography. This is by no means a fixed requirement and it will be important for the Tutor to spend time getting to know which subjects play to his strengths. The Tutor should not feel limited to A levels; there is no reason why some US Advanced Placement (AP) courses, or even IB online through Pamoja Education, might be worth including. It would therefore be an advantage if the Tutor had some prior personal or professional experience with selection and delivery of non-UK curricula. In addition to preparation for examination subjects, the student would like to improve his spoken French so it would be ideal if the Tutor was comfortable with the language.

Although the success of the role will be measured mostly by whether the student goes on to University, the job is as much about rebuilding his confidence as it is about increasing his subject knowledge and general abilities. The Tutor will need to be patient and firm in equal measures, with an infectious enthusiasm for many subjects and a deep knowledge of his preferred subject areas. The Tutor must be able to assess the student's current level, discover where there are gaps in his knowledge and address each of his weak areas. He will need solid academic foundations if he is to succeed at A level and gain a place at the university of his choice. His overall study techniques are somewhat lacking, and the Tutor should be prepared to help him to learn tricks to help manage his attention and focus, improve his academic writing and structure his notes properly. Additional techniques to help his memory, organisation skills and reading strategies will be important.

Although academic in focus, this role is an excellent opportunity for an educator to think outside the box. The student has not responded well to traditional methods of schooling, so a new approach is needed. The Tutor must devise and implement a timetable that ensures a thorough understanding of all of the material in the entire syllabi of all target subjects, allows for constant revision of the material covered, and includes thorough exam preparation. The timetable should be interesting and varied, and the Tutor should be inspiring and enthusiastic.

Hours, Holidays, and Accommodation

This is a full time position and, as far as possible, learning will need to follow a planned timetable. The Tutor should expect to work around forty hours per week with preparation in addition. The Tutor will be entitled to an average of two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, but may need to be flexible regarding the family's travel plans or other family commitments.

The Tutor is entitled to a minimum of 45 days holiday per annum.

Accommodation is provided for the Tutor in the family's home in Jersey. A car will be available for the Tutor's reasonable local use.

Travel and Miscellaneous

If the Tutor is asked to accompany the Client on any travel, the Client will be responsible for all the Tutor's travel expenses and accommodation arrangements, but not his or her food or personal telephone usage. It is expected that this role will involve significant amounts of travel.

If a car is needed for the Tutor, one will be rented as needed in each location. Where public transport is excellent and a car either unnecessary or inadvisable, the Client will reimburse the Tutor for the use of public transport.

The Tutor should be a non-smoker, lead a physically active lifestyle, and be healthy and fit. He or she should be engaging, have a good sense of humour and a sunny disposition. Naturally, he or she is expected to be an excellent tutor and at the same time an inspiring mentor for the positive as well as progressive development of the student's academic career.
