Students
The children are typical of their ages: energetic, inquisitive, and hardworking. All three are interested in animals, are knowledgeable about the world they live in, and are well-travelled. The younger child rides horses, loves street dance and plays piano. All three children enjoy sports and games, especially football and tennis. The boys are both tech savvy and aware of developments in the industry; it will be important for the Tutor to be ‘with-it' in this regard. The oldest boy likes gadgets, writes rap, poetry and sings, while the younger boy plays the drums. All three children enjoy listening to a wide variety of music.
The children are polite, gregarious, considerate, and thoughtful, and will be a pleasure for an able teacher to work with. They enjoy working with teachers that deserve respect because they are not only inspirational, knowledgeable and interesting, but also people who are organised, calm, patient, well prepared and who have a sense of humour. The Tutors must be able to think ‘outside the box' and vary their teaching methods to keep lessons interesting while at the same time constantly adapting their teaching style to find what works best with each of the children.
Part of their time away will be dedicated to a socially responsible, community-based project. The Tutors should be sympathetic to these principles and ideals and incorporate these values into their lessons.
Role of the Tutor
The role will require a truly superb educator, who has the ability to use their environment to make their lessons come alive, and who has the experience of teaching across the age range involved in this contract. They should have excellent subject knowledge, and infectious enthusiasm for every subject they cover.
Teaching in the inspirational environment of the South-East Asia or along the largely undeveloped Pacific coast offers able teachers unparalleled opportunities to illuminate the standard curriculum and enhance the learning experience in ways that should make this experience for all three children something special that they reflect on fondly and look forward to with excitement. The Tutors should use the local environment as a resource wherever possible. This aspect of the role should not be reactive according to the parents schedule - it should be proactive with the Tutors seeking out opportunities and constantly making suggestions.
Although very free in scope, the Tutors must recognise that their students will need to be well versed in the appropriate levels of the core subjects on their return to mainstream school, and so an emphasis on these subjects would be helpful. Maths and Science and English are especially important, so it is essential that between them the Tutors are specialists in these three subjects.
The Tutors will need to be organised, flexible, and adaptable. Although the family will try to maintain a routine, there may be occasions when local festivals are taking place, or a volcano is worth a visit, and the decision is made to adjust plans at short notice. It is important to roll with these occasional interruptions, even to join in with the family, and certainly never to complain. Equally important is the need to remember that the role is likely to be based in fairly remote locations that can make technology unreliable. There may be times when it is impossible to get online or to access a printer. The Tutors must take these events in stride and make allowance for them rather than getting frustrated.
While away, the family is considering the possibility of enrolling their children into a local school on a short-term basis. If this is the case, the Tutors will be required to work closely with the school, possibly even assisting the main teacher in the classroom or helping in some other way with the school. The Tutors must build good relationships with the school staff to ensure that the children get the very best out of this arrangement.
Clearly, this role requires resourceful, intelligent and knowledgeable educators who are sensitive to the unusual circumstances of the position, relaxed and easy-going with a sunny disposition on the one hand while firm, encouraging and directed on the other. It is also important that the Tutors remember that although the working environment is relaxed compared to formal schooling in England, it is essential they remain professional at all times, respectful of the family's privacy, and aware of the confidential nature of the assignment.
Hours, Holidays, and Accommodation
The Tutors should expect to work an average of 40 hours per week with preparation time in addition. They will be entitled to two consecutive days off each week, though these will not always fall on the weekends, and if more than one Tutor is appointed, then the Tutors should not necessarily expect to be off at the same time. The Tutors will not be entitled to local public holidays.
Any untaken holiday entitlement that has accrued will be compensated at the end of the contract.
The Client will provide separate, furnished accommodation with Internet for the Tutors, which will likely also act as the children's schoolroom. This accommodation will be clean, safe and secure, but given the style of travelling the family want to undertake, it may be comparatively basic. The Client will be responsible for all bills on this property with the exception of any private phone calls.
The Tutors are responsible for their own meals except for any that occur during tutoring time.
Travel and Miscellaneous
It is unlikely that a car will be provided for the majority of the contract. However, the Tutors will have use of a bicycle or moped on a daily basis. If a car is required for tutoring purposes, the Client will cover all costs associated with it.
It is essential that the Tutors are non-smokers, fit and physically active, lead a healthy lifestyle, and in so doing set a good example.
The Tutors will be responsible for arranging and financing their own health, possessions, and travel insurance.
It is noted that in addition to signing a confidentiality agreement with Tutors International as part of the standard tutoring contract, subject to review by Tutors International, the Tutors will be required to sign a confidentiality document directly with the Client. If any part of the Client confidentiality agreement conflicts with the Terms, the Client version will apply.
