The position is potentially for 5 months, and may be repeated in subsequent years.
The position will commence as soon as a suitable candidate has been identified, and finish in late February 2007.
Students
The main student is the eldest boy. He is in year 7 and was slow to settle after his return from Mexico last year. His school describe him as a talented child, though he applies himself more to subjects he is interested in, and he can be a bit disorganised and dreamy. His marks have been average and have lagged behind his previous performance.
The boy is studying a wide range of school subjects: Maths, English, Science, Geography, History, Music, Art, IT, PE, RS, Food Technology, and is in his second year of French.
The three younger children are in years 6, 4, and 3. The tutor will need to able to support all these subjects at various levels.
Role of the Tutor
The tutor will work after school and at weekends as required to support the student’s homework and preparation for school, as well as finding and filling any gaps in his knowledge. It is also likely that the tutor may be asked to join the boy in the classroom sometimes. It is hoped that the right tutor will be able to fire the boy’s imagination and curiosity for learning.
When the family leave for Mexico - at the beginning of December - the tutor will be responsible for making sure all the boys stay up-to-date with their schoolwork. The boys are all at the same school and this break is a regular occurrence, which the school supports. The tutor will need to liaise closely with the school to make sure the children return ready to rejoin their peers.
The tutor should be able to use the opportunities afforded by the immediate environment in Mexico to develop fun and creative projects that also fulfil their school curriculum objectives. There is a dedicated schoolroom available for the teaching.
The Tutor will need to be adaptable and affable, and able to work with a diverse range of ages and subjects. The position will require the tutor to be flexible throughout the assignment. The ideal tutor will also have some Spanish.
Hours and Holidays
Weekends will be free, and there will be two weeks paid vacation – one to be taken between the UK and Mexican sections of the assignment, and a further week during the Christmas period.
Accommodation and Travel
In Mexico, a furnished apartment near the family home will be rented for the tutor. Except for the tutor’s personal phone calls, the client will cover all bills on the apartment. The apartment is suitable for a couple, and the tutor is welcome to bring their partner for the Mexico section of the assignment, (at their own cost).
The client will cover the cost of one return journey from the tutor’s home to the Client’s location in the UK, and will provide return air tickets for the travel to Mexico.
A rental car will be provided, so a clean driving licence is essential.
The client will also provide travel insurance for the duration of the contract.
