A tutor is required to work full time in New York, to start as soon as possible.
Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Students

The main focus is a boy, aged 12, going into grade 7. He attends a local private school and requires higher grades than he is currently achieving in order to be considered for his preferred choice of High School.

The boy is amiable and confident, with a wide range of interests in sports and music, and will be a pleasure to have as a student. He needs support across all his school subjects - Algebra, English, Science, History, Geography, Art and Music - but especially in French and Latin. The boy is accomplished at tennis and basketball, plays electric guitar, and sings in the school choir.

Unfortunately, and probably the root of his middling grades, is that he is not a good judge of his academic limitations, so that he gives less attention to study than is required while at the same time believing that he has done more than enough. He can also be a little stubborn, but is looking forward to working with a tutor to improve his grades and realise his ambition.

The tutor will also work, to a much lesser extent, with a younger brother, aged 9. This boy can be rather dreamy and disconnected, and is often isolated in group situations. He is going into 4th grade this year and needs someone to ignite some academic passion.

Role of the Tutor

The ideal tutor will have a Classics background and have been well-educated - Oxbridge or equivalent. The tutor must be proficient in French and Latin, have excellent written and spoken English, as well as good Mathematics skills up to O-level. An interest in cricket and tennis would be an advantage.

On days when the older boy has after-school activities, the tutor will work with the younger brother. He may need some help with homework, but the main focus of the tutor’s work will be in stirring enthusiasm in whatever arena he can be inspired.

When the older brother gets back, the tutor will work with him. The tutor will ensure that his homework is complete and correct for the due date. The tutor should also ensure that all quizzes and tests are thoroughly prepared and that the boy knows the relevant material.

The mother will liaise with the school and make sure that her son cannot misrepresent his homework assignments to the tutor - there will be no direct contact between the tutor and the school.

Hours and Holidays

The tutor will work after school between 3.30pm and 10pm, Sunday-Thursday inclusive.

There will be at least 9 weeks paid vacation during the contract term, at times convenient to the Client. These will normally follow that school vacations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break and Summer.

Accommodation and Travel

The client will provide a furnished apartment near the family home in Manhattan. The client will cover all bills, with the exception of food and personal telephone charges. The client will provide meals that occur during the tutoring time.

The client will cover the cost of the first outward and final return journeys only.

If the client wishes to take the tutor with them when they travel, the client will be responsible for all expenses relating to the tutor.
