London (BAH-0416)
This position is not currently available.
An experienced, energetic and broadly able Tutor (though not necessarily a qualified teacher) is required to fill a short-term role covering the last two weeks of June in London. There are two young girls.

Students

There are two girls, aged 6 and 3. Both girls are kind, funny, warm and engaging. The older girl currently attends a prep school in The Bahamas where she has settled well, and is easily performing on par with her peers. She has the capacity to work at a higher level than is currently expected at her school, and thrives in environments where she can learn according to her own interests and at her own pace.

At 3 years old, the younger girl is a charming and bright child. She has a sense of mischief which she regularly engages in annoying her sister! The two have developed a healthy rivalry which can no doubt be utilised by a skilful Tutor. As is often the case with younger siblings, she is the more determined of the two girls. She has a strong personality and desire to keep pace with her older sister despite their age difference. She has not yet started school.

Both girls are very sporty – they are confident swimmers, play tennis, ski and have ballet lessons. They are happy, healthy children who enjoy being outdoors and active. There has been talk of introducing horse riding lessons as well as music classes to their extra-curricular activities, and doubtless both will take place in the course of time. The girls are charming, polite and fun to be around.

Role of the Tutor

For this assignment the Tutor will be responsible for the two girls, while their parents are working in London. The girls are not always cooperative with one another, so the Tutor should expect to manage them in a way that keeps both girls interested and occupied, albeit in different ways.

The Tutor should be highly familiar with London and the vast range of educationally rich and fun activities it offers young children. Essentially the role is to act as a ‘tour guide’ to the city so that the girls’ memories of their visit is both long-lasting and educational.

The successful candidate for this role will need to be upbeat and have plenty of energy. This role requires a resourceful, intelligent and knowledgeable tutor who is relaxed and easy-going with a sunny disposition on the one hand whilst also firm, encouraging and sensible. They should set a good example for the children through their behaviour and conduct. It is important that the Tutor remembers that, although the family and working environment may be relaxed compared to formal schooling in Bahamas, it is essential to remain professional at all times and respectful of the family’s privacy.

Both parents are well read and are informed about many subjects including education theory. They are people who take the time to do their research and critically analyse the information they find, so it is important that the successful Tutor has a thorough understanding of current practices, and has enough pride in their profession to keep themselves up to date with new research and techniques.

The Tutor should be eloquent, able to explain concepts simply and able to inspire with his or her enthusiasm for any given subject. He or she should have a wide knowledge base and a range of extra-curricular skills and interests that they can share with the family. The Tutor should be a natural communicator with a kind and caring disposition, and a firm-but-fair approach to their work.

There may be some occasions when the Client is busy in the evenings and on these occasions the Tutor will be expected to remain with the girls until their parents return, in a baby-sitting capacity.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor is expected to work up to an average of 50-60 hours per week contact time, with preparation time in addition. For the most part the hours will follow a stable timetable agreed with the parents, but the Tutor should also allow for flexibility. Travel time does not form part of the tutoring time unless tutoring takes place while traveling.

The Tutor should not expect any days off during this 2-week period. Given the short nature of this contract, the Tutor is not entitled to any holiday allowance, and is expected to work on any public holidays Monday-Friday.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

While in London, the Client will provide private accommodation for the Tutor at a local hotel or the Tutor is free to stay at their own home if they prefer. The Tutor will be reimbursed for public transport but will not have private use of a car provided by the Client.

The Client will be responsible for the Tutor’s full expenses arising from any travel required for the position throughout the contract term.

The Tutor should be a non-smoker, lead a physically active lifestyle, and be healthy and fit. He or she should be engaging, have a good sense of humour and a sunny disposition, and yet be a serious educator who understands his or her responsibility in this important role.
