Student
The boy is charming and polite, with a quick wit and a dry sense of humour. Although he is not competitive, fairness is very important to him.
He has several interests, notably in marine biology, animals and mathematics. He is learning the drums and guitar, and enjoys many sports such as swimming, football and golf. (The tutor will need to identify opportunities for involving the boy in sports, perhaps through local clubs.)
Role of the Tutor
The student will be educated in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, as well as Geography and History. The boy has been learning Spanish for about a year and this will also be continued. Particular attention will need to given to the boys writing skills in English, which are perhaps a little underdeveloped, and on challenging and stretching him in Maths, where he shows particular aptitude.
The tutor will need to develop a timetable and curriculum for each subject, as well as suitable assessments to keep track of the boys progress (in comparison to his peers in the UK). It is possible that the boy will return to the US school system, so the tutor will also be required to keep track of progress against the Florida state requirements.
Both parents are interested in working with their son. The mother would like to work with him on his Maths, the father with his English. The tutor will need to work closely with both parents and guide them with their choice of material, development of curricula, assessment and teaching styles.
Other aspects of the tutoring
Dedicated teaching rooms will be provided in each location where the tutoring will take place. The family are planning to make a small laboratory so that the boys science skills are also developed. In addition, the tutor should take every opportunity to expand learning experiences to take account of local resources.
This position will suit a well-qualified teacher who already has at least 3 years teaching experience in schools in KS3 and 4. The dual nature of the position, as tutor to the boy and mentor to the parents, will suit a teacher who has some leadership experience.
The tutor will enjoy a healthy and physically active lifestyle, and must be a non-smoker.
Accommodation, Travel, Holidays, etc
Freed from the constraints of traditional schooling, the family are planning to travel widely, visiting places of interest throughout the world. It is expected that the tutor will help plan these trips, perhaps in relation to some of the teaching. The tutor will need to ensure that educational opportunities are exploited in each new locale.
It is not known at this stage how long will be spent in each place, or where these locations will be. While travelling, accommodation will be arranged and paid for by the client - this will vary depending on the location and duration of such travel. (The maximum stay per year in the US is unlikely to exceed 4 months, with no time there in 2007.)
Quite separately from travelling with the family, the tutor will be entitled to 9 weeks paid holiday per annum, as per the Terms of Business.
A car will be provided for the use of the tutor - a clean driving licence is essential.
