An able and experienced teacher with a proven track record is required to work part-time with one boy aged 9. The position starts September 1st, or as soon as possible after, until the end of January 2017. This role will be in parallel with another teacher working intensively with this child’s older brother.
This is short term role focussing on just one child, but forms part of more extended job that will commence in January 2017, after the exams, and run until the end of July 2018. The long term role is described by Specification SUR 0816 LT. Candidates interested this short term position and the long term role must apply separately for both positions.
Student
The student is 9 and is the younger of two brothers from a lovely family. For the past academic year, the two boys have been home-schooled by a primary teacher (not through Tutors International). The decision to home-school was made because it was clear in July 2015 that the older boy was not on track to do well in his 11+ in January 2017 and the family thought that the individual attention that would come from a good private tutor would improve his performance. It made sense to take the two boys out of school together to ensure that the younger brother did not end up in the same place as his older brother a year later. Unfortunately, the tutoring they received, while probably about the standard of a middling state primary school, did not move the older child on at the hoped-for pace, and from September 2016 they will be engaging a specialist to teach him separately full time until the 11+ exams.
The student is a considerate and engaging boy who is bright and clearly has considerable potential. He is interested in the world in general and has been exposed to a wide range of experiences through travel, sports, and the busy life of a large family. He has done well in a home school environment despite lacklustre teaching. He is easy-going and likes to please his teachers. He will be a joy for a good teacher to work with.
Role of the Tutor
For this short term intensive role, the Tutor will work solely with the younger brother, continuing his home education which to date has been following the standard British curriculum. He will be taking his 11+ in January 2018, and is almost certainly not on the correct trajectory do well in it due to the weak teaching he received in the 2015/16 academic year. It would be helpful if, during the short term of this placement, the Tutor were to be able to bring this back on track. This should be a comfortably achievable goal while working one-on-one with a capable young boy who is happy to be home educated.
The successful candidate for this role will typically work 5-hours per day, Monday to Friday, obviously with breaks as needed during the day for lunch etc. Preparation time is in addition.
The Tutor must be organised in his or her work and able to develop a teaching structure that allows the student’s parents to be able to follow their son’s progress.
Hours, Holidays, Accommodatin, Travel, and Miscellaneous
The Tutor should expect to work an average of 25 hours a week during weekdays. This does not include time for preparation and marking.
No accommodation is available for this role.
Travel is not expected as part of this job. If that should change, the Tutor’s full expenses and a per diem stipend will be covered by the Client.
The Tutor is responsible for his or her own commuting costs. The nearest train station is Walton-on-Thames and there is a fast train service to Waterloo.
It is essential that the Tutor is a non-smoker and leads a healthy lifestyle.
The Tutor will send daily reports to Tutors International. These will summarise teaching and learning for the day, and will discuss any behavioural issues encountered and how they were dealt with. In addition to daily reports to TI the Tutor will prepare weekly reports for the Client. A DropBox will be maintained in which progression will be readily available for review at any time by the Client and TI.
