Overview
Tutors International has been responsible for the education of the family’s four children since May 2012, and is currently providing three Tutors. Two are principally for the older children; a science & maths specialist, and a humanities specialist. The education of the two younger children is the responsibility of a primary specialist. This new role is to be the primary teacher of French and also to become the replacement humanities teacher from September 2017, when the current Tutor will be leaving the position.
The Tutor will be responsible for teaching French and English to A level standard (likely to be CIE International A levels). They will also be expected to teach French to the younger children as well as teaching History, English Language and English Literature to at least Key Stage 3 level. The ability to teach additional languages or music would be advantageous.
The position is based mainly in Europe with frequent travel to the family’s homes. The job starts as soon as possible, with the latest start date being September 2017. An earlier start date would be advantageous to enable overlap with the existing tutor. The initial contract will run until the end of August 2018. After that the position will be renewable annually by mutual agreement between all parties, ideally for at least one year.
Students
From September 2016, the children will be in the equivalent of year 4, year 6, year 11 and year 13. It should be noted though that, because of the bespoke education that they have received so far, they are generally ahead of the levels that would normally be expected for these school years.
The oldest boy is in his final year of home schooling. He has achieved excellent results in both his IGCSE’s and AS’s. He has currently passed 10 IGCSEs and 1 O level with 9 passes at A-A*’s and 2 passes at B. He took 5 subjects this summer at AS level; History, Classical Civilisation, French, Maths, and Further Maths, and again has had very good results. He has now dropped Further Maths as an A2 to concentrate on achieving excellent results in his other subjects. He is aiming to apply to Cambridge to read History in September 2018.
The oldest girl is currently in Year 11. She has taken 6 IGCSEs already; Latin (in year 9) A*, French A* English Language A, Combined Sciences AA, and Maths B. She is planning to take another 5 IGCSEs this year as well as AS Latin. Although she has taken her IGCSE French already her intention is currently that she will study it to A level. Her A level choices are not fixed yet, but are potentially going to be English, French, Maths and Geography.
The younger girl is in her final year of primary education, Year 6, this year. She has been studying a broad primary curriculum, based around individual numeracy and literacy lessons and differentiated joint topics work with her younger brother. Additionally, both of the younger children have been having lessons introducing them to Latin and French, but would benefit from having a specialist language teacher. She will soon be starting the transition process to a middle school curriculum, so would also benefit from being taught more frequently in separate subjects.
The youngest boy has entered year 4 this year. He routinely works at a much higher level than his age suggests, particularly in mathematics. He has had the same structure to his school time as his sister.
All of the children have full extra-curricular schedules, including dancing, drama, tennis, skiing and many other activities. They are all well-mannered, pleasant, and interesting, with a good work ethic and an appetite for learning.
Role of the Tutor
As the Tutor will be responsible for teaching French to all of the children throughout the school age range, they must have experience of teaching French to A level, including having excellent spoken French, and must be confident in their ability to teach this aspect of the subject to the highest level. They must also be comfortable with teaching French to younger students, including primary age.
As well as their core responsibilities, the Tutor would ideally be able to teach other interests such as art, music, or other languages.
The appointed candidate will be highly educated, intelligent, well-travelled, responsible, practical, and down-to- earth with a sense of fun and a wide range of personal interests they can bring to the role. The ideal Tutor will be physically fit and active. The children will respond best to a young, positive, friendly and enthusiastic person who can fit in with the existing tutors to provide a broad range education.
The intention is that the children will be home-schooled until age 16 at least. The Tutor will need to design and deliver courses that solidify their schooling to date and that progress them at least as quickly as the best schools, but without being pressuring or overbearing.
It will be essential for the Tutor to maintain meticulous, up-to-date records of achievement for all the children and across all their subjects.
There is a well-equipped, and dedicated schoolroom in all locations; the Tutors will be responsible for ensuring that it remains organised and properly stocked. The Tutors will also need to be responsible for packing and moving any teaching materials they wish to take between the locations or use during periods of travel.
Hours and holidays
This position should not be viewed as a ‘9 to 5’ job as all of the tutors live in shared accommodation and there is by necessity a certain amount of co-operation and teamwork needed outside the school day as well as during. A willingness to help out with transporting children to after school events from time to time is expected.
The Tutor will be entitled to a minimum of 9 weeks (45 days) holiday per year. This will be taken at times agreed with the Client. It will usually be broadly in line with ‘standard’ school holiday periods.
Accommodation, Travel and Miscellaneous
The family have homes throughout Europe, and travel frequently between them. In addition, because the children are being educated in this way, the family have freedom to travel unfettered by the need to attend a specific school, and the Tutors should expect trips further afield.
The ideal applicant will be a qualified teacher, with plenty of experience, enthusiasm and energy. He or she will need a track record of preparing students for excellence and must be capable of adapting their working style to fit the variable circumstances of working with four children at home or while travelling. It should be noted that travel plans are subject to change at fairly short notice, so it is essential that the Tutor is flexible and able to cope with changing arrangements.
Because of the travel and accommodation requirements this role is not suitable for applicants with an accompanying partner.
The Tutor should be a non-smoker, physically fit, imaginative and inventive. They must be a confident driver.
The family are very close and are very keen for a friendly and fun learning environment to be built for their children. A willingness to participate in extra-curricular activities, to be a good role model for the children and a pleasant companion for the whole family and to be able to create a good relationship with the other tutors both inside and outside the classroom is required.
