Duties
The Tutor will be responsible for making sure the boy is ready for school in the mornings, and for taking him to school. The rest of the day, until school ends, will generally be free for preparation. The boy returns at the end of the afternoon and will do about 2 hours formal studying between 4pm and 6pm. Apart from supper, the remainder of the evening will include fun/educational activities. Saturdays will generally be all day with the boy.
Attributes
The family is considering taking the boy out of school for longer periods of travel and the tutor must be capable of delivering the whole curriculum over these periods. In addition the Tutor must have the credibility to reassure the school that the boy will not slip behind. It may therefore be necessary for the tutor to gain a New York teaching credential soon after taking up the position.
The boy has a strong character and knows his own mind. The right candidate will need to maintain a balance - aloof yet personable, commanding respect but not dogmatic or overbearing. The boy has many interests and will benefit from a Tutor who can explore the world through those interests, and to inspire him to become a well-rounded, multi-skilled, and confident young man.
Hours
From time to time the parents will be away at weekends. At such times the Tutor/Governor will be responsible for the young man during the whole period - a quid pro quo will be offered to compensate for this additional load.
The Tutor/Governor should expect to work around 40 hours per week in total, but should not count every hour and should anticipate that demands will vary considerably.
Working Environment
The tone and tenor of the residence is semi-formal and the spirit of respect for others and family values are encouraged. The family is very private, their family philosophy is mutual respect, and they have high standards of cleanliness, timeliness and thoroughness.
The family lives in one of the Hamptons, in a small, rather chic, resort town, about 2 hours drive from Manhattan. Although busy in the summer, it is not an exciting place out of season. The ideal candidate will therefore need to have their own, self-sufficient interests. The position would also suit a stable couple, where the spouse could work in some other capacity within the household staff, perhaps as Personal Assistant, or other responsible position.
As with all good employment relationships, a spirit of mutual respect is desired. Of ultimate importance will be the relationship that the tutor establishes with the child and making sure that it is appropriate, enjoyable and within the wishes of the parents.
