Student
The student is in Year 12, boarding at a good UK independent school, studying for her A levels. She attended an international school in Madrid for her IGCSEs, in which she achieved high grades in all subjects. Although she is doing very well in History and Religious Studies, she is having some difficulties with Mathematics (Edexcel). This is a problem as she intends to apply to good universities to study History and anticipates her offer being high and needed a good grade in all A levels, probably at least AAA.
Her school reports show that she has performed well across all aspects of mathematics, scoring high marks consistently on past papers and internal tests. She has, however, had problems recently with a set of mock exams, in which she scored 27%, 39% and 47%. Although these results could be due to poor exam technique etc, there are some questions about her deep understanding of the subject and it may be the case that, as she isn’t a “natural mathematician”, she may be struggling with the more advanced level of the questions at A level. Having said that, her work so far in class suggests that she should be able to succeed. Her teachers have no doubt that she will be able to achieve an A grade given the correct support. The school plan to enter her for another set of mock exams in September to give them the evidence they require to make an accurate grade estimate for UCAS, as they do not feel that these scores are a fair reflection of her potential.
Role of the Tutor
The intention is that there are two parts to the tuition. The Tutor will work with the student online while she is at school on a regular basis throughout the week. The lessons are likely to take place in the evenings, with the exact timetable to be agreed. During the school holidays, she will return to Spain, and the intention is that the Tutor joins her for week long intensive tuition sessions.
The initial plan is that the tuition will take place as follows:
May 28 – June 3 | Full time in Madrid | Approx 8 hours per day for 6 days per week |
June 4 – July 1 | Online | Approx 3 hours per week |
July 2 – 19 | Holiday | No tuition |
July 16 – 22 | Online | Approx 3 hours per week |
July 23 – 29 | Full time in Madrid | Approx 8 hours per day for 6 days per week |
July 31 – August 5 | Online | Approx 3 hours per week |
August 5 - 19 | Holiday | No tuition |
August 20 – 31 | Online | Approx 3 hours per week |
September 1 – 9 | Preparation for return to UK | No tuition |
September 10 - 23 | Online | Approx 3 hours per week |
This plan is subject to alteration as the effectiveness of the tuition is determined.
The Tutor will be required to keep accurate records of the tuition sessions delivered, and will submit monthly timesheets to allow payment to be calculated. The exact details of the tuition schedule while she is at school is to be agreed and approved by the school. The Client will assist with this.
After this initial series of tuition sessions, it is likely that the tuition will continue until the A level exams in June 2019. The schedule is to be confirmed.
Hours and holidays
The Tutor will follow a timetable as initially described above and subject to changes as agreed with the client.
There is no additional holiday entitlement.
Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous
The Tutor will be provided with en-suite accommodation in Madrid within the Client’s home. Save for the Tutor’s personal telephone use, the Client will cover all bills.
The Tutor should not expect to have access to a vehicle for his or her personal use.
The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and will need to have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.
The Tutor must be fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
