Students
The twins are 10 years old and in year 5 at a British School in Abuja. The educational goal is to prepare them for entrance into top boarding schools in UK or Europe.
The young lady, is a bright and friendly child who enjoys school and her peer group. She is an avid reader and particularly enjoys creative writing. She likes teachers who are clear, helpful and have a sense of humour. Her current favourite teacher taught her to crochet recently and she enjoys this immensely. She would very much like a young, dynamic, patient tutor who enjoys many different activities: dancing, singing, ideally plays an instrument, crochets, reads extensively, cooks, draws and is not too strict.
Her brother is a warm and affectionate child, who is close to his sibling. Slightly more reserved than his sister, his preferred learning style involves fun and games, making it essential for the Tutor to blend educational content with engaging, playful activities. He is currently fascinated by go karts. He describes his ideal tutor as friendly, kind and funny - someone who likes animals, enjoys walks in nature and allows them breaks between lessons!
Both children enjoy a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including piano, swimming, French, tennis, gymnastics and football. Over the last two summers, they have attended summer schools at prestigious schools in both the UK and Switzerland to help widen their horizons and prepare them for secondary school boarding.
Role of the Tutor
During term time, the Tutor will be responsible for providing educational support tailored to each child's needs. The Tutor must employ immersive and engaging teaching methods to enhance the children’s learning, using a combination of traditional instruction and interactive, game-based learning to make sessions enjoyable and effective.
In addition to educational support, the Tutor will manage the children’s extra-curricular timetable. At present, this includes piano, French, tennis, gymnastics and football after school. Given the importance of physical activities in the children’s overall development, the Tutor should be sporty and able to engage the children in various physical activities, such as football and other sports. This will help balance their academic work with physical exercise, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
When the children are not in school, the Tutor will be expected to manage their schedule and devise projects, activities and excursions that engage and enrich their development. These could include world affairs, technology and culture, as it is important that the children are introduced to all these topics. The Tutor should have the intellectual range to help the students begin to become well rounded, intellectually curious, and thoughtful world citizens.
The Tutor should be patient, creative, and an excellent role model. They will need to nurture the children holistically as individuals, paying attention to manners, developing their communication and public speaking skills and building their confidence through debate and dialogue.
The role also requires the Tutor to be adaptable to different teaching environments and flexible with their schedule. The Tutor will need to create a consistent and stimulating educational experience across various settings, whether in the family’s home in Abuja or other locations during their school holidays and leisure travel.
Nigeria is a country with a rich cultural heritage and unique natural attractions. The climate is very warm, often reaching high temperatures with significant humidity. The socio-economic environment is diverse, reflecting a blend of traditional and modern influences. The Tutor must be comfortable or able to adapt to this environment, appreciating both its unique offerings and the need for flexibility in daily life. Experience in similar settings would be beneficial, as would a resilient and adaptable attitude towards both living and working conditions.
The ideal candidate will speak British English and French. They should have first-hand experience of the UK and European school systems and entry procedures. This role demands a combination of professional expertise, creativity, and a nurturing attitude to support the children's academic growth and well-being. The appointed candidate will be highly educated, intelligent, well-travelled, responsible, practical, and down-to-earth, with a strong sense of fun and a wide range of personal interests they can bring to the role.
Hours, Holidays, Accommodation & Travel
The Tutor will typically average around 40 hours contact time per week, with preparation in addition. This includes after-school tutoring sessions during the school week and more intensive support during weekend days and school holidays. The Tutor must demonstrate flexibility in adapting their working hours to the varying daily rhythms dictated by the family’s travel and educational activities.
The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, one weekend day (likely Sunday) and one school day (likely Monday), but it is essential that they understand the need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and other commitments.
The Tutor will have 6 weeks off per annum, to be taken at times agreed upon with the family. These may well be during the children’s term time. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.
In Abuja, the Tutor will be provided with either a fully contained unit with separate entrance on the family’s main property, or a rented 1-bedroom apartment nearby. No car will be provided but Ubers are readily available for local transport.
When traveling with the family, suitable accommodations will be arranged and covered by the Client.
Miscellaneous
The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. They will not only be excellent practitioners, but also good role models: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.
The Tutor must be fit, healthy and a non-smoker – active and energetic with a love for the outdoors; the kind of person who always makes the most of their environment to enhance teaching and learning opportunities.
