New York (NY-0907)
This position is not currently available.
A tutor is required to work full time in New York City, to support two boys after school. The placement runs from early September 2007, for one year initially, with possible renewal. The client is looking for an experienced educator with high personal standards across the board, someone well read and academically capable. The ideal candidate will have a background in – or familiarity with – the American education system in top-end private schools.
Application deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Students

The older boy (14) will be going into grade 8 at his local private school. He is amiable and confident, with a wide range of interests in sports and music, and is a pleasure to have as a student. He is accomplished at tennis and basketball, plays electric guitar, and sings in the school choir. He can be a little stubborn, but he enjoys working with a tutor.

He gets excellent grades provided he is thoroughly prepared for quizzes and tests, and his homework is completed properly. He is not yet a good judge of his academic limitations, and without the guidance of a tutor he gives less attention to study than is required, while at the same time believing that he has done more than enough.

The younger brother (11) will be going into grade 5. He is also a capable student when focused and motivated. However, he can be rather dreamy and disconnected at times, and is often isolated in social situations. He is still learning to find his way with his studies and would benefit from an energetic tutor who can ignite an academic passion.

Role of the Tutor

The tutor will start each evening working with the younger boy, helping with his homework until the older brother returns from school. Usually, at this time, the mother takes over unless social engagements make this inconvenient, in which case the tutor will continue to work with the younger boy, preparing him for quizzes and tests as well as making sure that homework assignments are completed properly and on time.

When the older brother returns from school, the tutor will change focus. This boy needs support across all his school subjects - Algebra, English, Science, History, Geography, Art and Music - but especially in French and Latin. The tutor will make sure that his homework is complete and correct for the due date, and that all quizzes and tests are thoroughly prepared. The tutor should ensure that the boy knows the relevant material, as well as extending him to draw links between different subject areas. When parental engagements mean that the tutor is working with the younger boy, the older brother should be encouraged to get on with his work by himself, seeking only verification.

The boys’ mother will liaise with the school and make sure that they cannot misrepresent their homework assignments to the tutor. (The mother will get any ‘missing’ work from the parents of other children). There will be no direct contact between the tutor, the parents of other students, and the school.

Hours and Holidays

The tutor will work after school, between 3.30pm and 10pm, Sunday to Thursday inclusive.

There will be 9 weeks paid vacation during the 12-month contract, at times convenient to the client. These will normally follow the school vacations of Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break and Summer.

Other Factors

The client will provide a furnished apartment near the family home. The client will cover all bills, with the exception of food and personal telephone charges.

The client will provide meals that occur during the tutoring time.

The job is in Manhattan, so no car is needed.

The client will cover the cost of the first outward and final return journeys only. If the client wishes the tutor to accompany the family when they travel, the client will cover all expenses.
