An able and experienced educator is required for a long-term assignment starting by 14th October 2019. The role focuses on tutoring the full range of school subjects for one boy aged 13, following the German curriculum as well as the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum for Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics. In three years, the student intends to transfer to a top British school. Additional tutoring will be required to prepare him for the entrance exam to his chosen British school and for transferring to an A level curriculum. The role will suit a sensitive, inspiring and knowledgeable Tutor with an interest in a range of subjects, an emphasis on natural sciences and enthusiasm for the culinary arts. This role is one of two positions (the other for a specialist in Maths and Science) with this student.

The Student

The focus of this role is a bright, enthusiastic and eloquent young man with an intense passion for cooking, baking and haute cuisine. He is polite, engaging and curious. His active vocabulary in German is impressive and he has deep pockets of knowledge on the subjects of history, politics and gastronomy. He is extremely well-versed in all food-related matters and can entertain a conversation on the subject at a level of depth and with an enthusiasm that is truly astonishing. He is not only extremely knowledgeable on various subjects of the culinary world but has also been experimenting with recipes from different cuisines. He has started creating his own dishes and multi-course menus. The ideal Tutor would share his interest in cooking and support him in developing this interest further in a more structured way.

The student is sensitive and remarkably self-reflective. In the past he was a victim of bullying and as a result transferred school. At his current school he still finds it hard to to connect with his peers and generally feels more comfortable in the company of adults. His pronounced sensitivity is accompanied by high emotional intelligence. The ideal candidate should be able to channel and further develop these strengths in productive ways, while also providing guidance on how to navigate the social environment at his school.

The student has been attending a private school in Germany where he achieved top marks over the past two years. He currently follows the German curriculum for Gymnasium, where his subjects are mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, geography, German, English, Spanish, history, ethics, and art.

At his current school the student often feels insufficiently challenged, especially in his mathematics and science classes. Should the decision be made that he stays at the school, it will be the science-specialist Tutor’s responsibility to cover more advanced topics in mathematics and the science subjects to keep him challenged, interested and engaged in order to help him achieve his academic ambitions. While plans for the future are by no means fixed, he has expressed an interest to either study culinary science at the Culinary Institute of America or to study medicine at one of Germany’s top universities. In either case, it is imperative that he continues to achieve top grades across the board and builds a strong foundation especially in the natural sciences.

Partially as a result of dyslexia, the student is generally slow when it comes to tasks that involve written language. While he is able to solve problems and answer questions verbally, he often begins to struggle and lose confidence when writing down his answers. The Tutor should be prepared to address this point and assist him in strengthening his use of written language. His level of English is slightly below where it should be and will require somewhat more attention than other subjects, especially in view of the fact that he aims to finish his secondary education in England.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor for this role will be half of a team of two Tutors and is tasked with delivering the German and English facets of the student’s German / pre-A Level education, likely following the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum.

To meet the entry requirements for a top British public school, he will prepare for 4 or 5 A levels. The student’s likely A level choices will be mathematics, biology, chemistry and economics. In addition, it would be sensible for him to take IGCSE and A level German before he moves to London. This discussion and decision is still ongoing and the Tutor will be part of the conversation to concretise the options with regards to work already covered and the syllabi involved. Preparation for the A level subject choices will therefore likely be the responsibility of the other Tutor.

This role calls for an able, calm and well-qualified educator who can deliver the full range of the German curriculum as well as preparation for German IGCSE and A level to the highest level. He or she should have an excellent academic record, a passion for learning and a deep-seated enthusiasm for sharing knowledge. The student is ambitious and does not aim at mediocrity; the goal is to achieve top grades in all subjects and prepare him as thoroughly as possible for the transition to a British curriculum. The Tutor must ensure to balance the dual demands of his work for his German school on the one hand, and the IGCSE/A level curricula on the other. The Tutor should be able to flexibly shift from one curriculum to the other and to use time in which there is less schoolwork for periods of intense focus on preparation. In this regard, choosing lesson times carefully around the demands of the two curricula will be important. Additionally, one or other of the Tutors for this role or for BER 0919 S must be able to support Spanish tuition.

While the student is mature in some respects, he lacks self-reliance in others. It will be part of the Tutor’s job to help him become more self-reliant and gain a stronger sense of self-efficacy when it comes to both the academic and non-academic spheres of life. This will require a patient and sensitive educator who is able to endow him with the self-regulatory skills that will allow him to succeed academically as well as to flourish in his extracurricular pursuits. In addition to further developing his interest in the culinary arts, part of the Tutor’s role will involve exploring other extracurricular activities together with him and to help him gain the self-confidence and self-reliance to succeed in these pursuits on his own. While no decisions have been made, he has expressed an interest in becoming active in the recruitment of donors for the German Bone Marrow Donor Agency DKMS and the OpenMed programme run by Doctors of the World. The ideal candidate will be able to guide him in putting his plans into concrete terms and to help him expand his current interests as well as those that he seeks to develop.

The Tutor should be interesting and erudite, open minded, and well-travelled. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values. It would be a bonus to find a Tutor who can bring extracurricular activities or skills that can be shared and enjoyed by the family, such as literature, tennis or debate.

There will be a designated schoolroom, and where possible during travel other designated spaces will be provided. While teaching will take place within a clear and formal timetable of lessons, the Tutor should be prepared for a high degree of flexibility and be able to shift focus between the two curricula. This role is based in Europe, so it is essential that any candidates for the position have full rights to employment and residency in a European country.

Hours and Holidays

Together the two tutors will typically have about 30 hours over 5 days each week contact time with the student, with preparation in addition. The share of the timetable must be established with reference to any extracurricular activities and travel arrangements, as well as between the two tutors, and be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected changes.

Each Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week but should not expect these to occur together, or at weekends or to be regular in their timing. The standard minimum 9 weeks (45 working days) of paid vacation per annum allowance applies to this contract, with these breaks being taken at times convenient to the Client.

Accrued untaken vacation allowance or weekend days will be compensated by payment in lieu at a pro-rated day rate.

Accommodation Travel, and Miscellaneous

The Tutor will be provided with furnished accommodation, or with a stipend of €3000 per calendar month, with which to arrange their own accommodation. The rent, utilities and Internet on this apartment will be arranged and paid for by the Client.

The Client is not responsible for the Tutor’s personal phone bills, or fuel usage.

The Tutor will be reimbursed for local public transport and travel costs incurred while travelling with the family. The Client is not responsible for the costs of personal travel when the Tutor is taking paid vacation beyond the requirements regarding flights to the Tutor’s place of normal residence as set out in the Terms.

The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.

The Tutor should be fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
