A highly able, skilled and enthusiastic advocate of kinesthetic learning is required as soon as possible for this full-time tutoring position working with a three year old. The role is to start as soon as possible and to run until August 31 in the first instance. The student will be living with his mother in their home in California.
He has been in a Montessori primary school in Hong Kong, and a balance between that style and a more disciplined, structured learning programme is desired.
Student
The student is a bright, able, 3½ year old boy. He has started his education pathway with a variety of activities including educational play, arts and crafts and music. He displays interest in whatever he is doing and engages well with the adults around him. He is able to follow instruction and is making good progress. He is from a family that want to ensure that he makes the most of the opportunities he has and develops educationally and socially into a well-rounded person.
The boy has also been having Mandarin immersion sessions a couple of times each week.
Role of the Tutor
The Tutor will be responsible for developing and delivering the programme of study. It should cover the general aspects of education appropriate for a child of this age. A focus on reading and writing, particularly phonics, is important, including the use of correct grammar and sentence structure when speaking.
The student is interested in building basic machines This interest will be developed by exposure to problem solving activities and appropriate age-based STEM projects. He will benefit from experiencing the development of projects over several days, moving towards a goal a bit at a time. The concept of splitting the day into planned time slots, and learning to read the time from a clock should be introduced.
The development of good manners and appropriate behaviour is very important to the family. He should be encouraged to look after property, to tidy up after activities, and to respect personal space and other people’s possessions and feelings.
A fully resourced schoolroom has been set up in the client’s home which will be used for the majority of lessons, with some time being spent outside at a nearby park or other local sites of interest. This outside time can also be used to start to develop an understanding of sports.
The Tutor will be playful, cheery, engaging and fun for the boy to be around, but must have a strong sense of discipline and be able to maintain the required standard of manners and social conduct. The Tutor must be able to evaluate how he is progressing and to tailor the lesson planning accordingly.
Hours and holidays
Teaching will follow a regular schedule, starting at 10am and will generally be able to handle a full day schedule. Given his age, he will sometimes be tired, so plans will need to change to allow him to rest. The Tutor must be able to respond flexibly.
There are Mandarin lessons on some afternoons each week, which the Tutor will need to account for in the weekly plan.
The annual holiday allowance of 45 working days will be prorated depending on the agreed start date. Holiday will be taken as agreed with the Client. Any untaken holiday will be paid at the daily rate after the contract is completed.
Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous
The Tutor will be provided with furnished accommodation in a one-bedroom apartment, 5 minutes from the client’s home. The rent, utilities and internet on this apartment will be arranged and paid for by the Client. The Client is not responsible for the Tutor’s personal phone bills.
A rental car will be provided for the Tutor. In addition, the Tutor will be reimbursed for any travels costs incurred while travelling with the family. The Client is not responsible for the costs of personal travel when the Tutor is taking paid vacation beyond the requirements regarding flights to the Tutor’s place of normal residence as set out in the Terms.
There will always be someone else available to assist with any childcare requirements, but the Tutor should expect that they will help with encouraging potty breaks and so on.
The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and will need to have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.
The Tutor should be fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
