Miami (MIA 0121)
This position is not currently available.
An able and experienced educator is required for a short-term assignment starting February 1st until June 30th 2021. The role involves tutoring two siblings, a girl aged 9 and a boy aged 7 in Miami. This role is full time home-schooling.

Students

The 9 year old girl is focused and tenacious. She likes reading and math and is beyond the US curriculum for her age group. That said, there is still room for improvement in both areas if she is to maintain this level and remain on the standard of her British peers. She is a very accomplished Nordic skier for her age. She also likes tennis, horse-back riding and alpine skiing. She speaks English, German and Mandarin.

Like his sister, the 7 year old boy also speaks English, German and Mandarin. He is also beyond the US curriculum for his US age group in terms of reading and math, and on with the British system. He has made great progress in his handwriting, which was an area of improvement. However, he still needs support in this area to encourage and continue to develop his physical control. He is very tall for his age, and his muscles aren’t as developed as they should be. There are no learning or cognitive issues – it is simply a case of helping to manage his physical control. He also needs encouragement and reminding to help improve his lisping (mainly the pronunciation of S and TH). He no longer receives speech therapy for this and is now, more often than not, producing correct pronunciation. He loves alpine skiing and tennis.

Both siblings are smart but need a disciplined approach to learning. They have been working well together but occasionally have normal sibling rivalry and this needs to be managed by the Tutor. They are eager to impress and make the Tutor proud of their work. They follow instructions well and have been motivated by the use of sticker charts and weekly rewards.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will be required to work with the children on a daily basis to ensure that they continue to advance with their math and literacy. Work books are available for math and literacy and additional science, art and music lessons will be the tutor’s responsibility. The children’s school in Washington DC will reopen in September but it is not known at this stage what those arrangements will be. The children will attend school from September.

In addition to supporting the academic work, the tutor should also identify other learning opportunities and help the children capture them (within reason). One example would be to continue to accelerate their reading and math so that they find their uncertain educational future less of a burden. The Tutor will organise one hour’s physical activity or sports into each day’s schedule. This can be facilitated at the family building in Miami.

The key role of the Tutor is to ensure that the children do not lose any ground before returning to school in September.

Hours and holidays

During periods of full-time home education, schoolwork is ideally from 8:30am-12:30pm, including a snack break, followed by a lunch break. The children will then resume schoolwork from 1:30-3:30pm. There may be changes made to the schedule due to other activities and the tutor should remain flexible. The Tutor will not exceed 40 hours contact time per week.

The Tutor will have normally have weekends and evenings off, but should expect that there may be some occasions when she or he is asked to stay late or do some baby-sitting.

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

The Client will provide a furnished apartment for the Tutor near to the family’s home in Miami.

Whilst the main location of the assignment will be in Miami, the family plans some selective travel in the USA and the Tutor will be required to accompany the family when this occurs during school days. The Tutor will be reimbursed for all local public transport and any travels costs incurred while travelling with the family.

The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.

The Tutor will be physically fit and healthy, a non-smoker.
