New Jersey (NJ-0608)
This position is not currently available.
A well-qualified and competent teacher is required to work as a full-time tutor for three children. The position is based in New Jersey but will include a great deal of world travel. The start date for the contract depends entirely on when the right candidate has been found and when he or she is available to take up the position.

Students

There are two boys, aged 7 and 3, and a girl of 6. The children are lovely, polite and well-behaved. They have been homeschooled for the last three years, partly by a nearby tutoring centre, and partly by their mother, in a schoolroom at the family home. The aim has been to foster a love of learning, an ability to work co-operatively, focus and attention. Using the core subjects of Science, Maths and English, this has approach has been immensely successful.

All three children have shown an aptitude for languages. In addition to English and Korean, they already have some Spanish and are currently learning French and Chinese. The also show musical and artistic ability, and enjoy games and sports, especially Tae Kwon Do and swimming.

The children do not watch television, or play computer games, unless these are of an educational nature. Instead, they are encouraged to develop their minds and bodies through board games, reading, sports, and exploring their creativity.

Role of the Tutor

This is an exciting opportunity with a wide remit, including considerable responsibility and travel.

There are no definite plans to integrate the children into a school, nor any idea which educational system or even in which country this might be. However, the tutor will need to develop a program of study - in collaboration with the parents - that stays sufficiently close to standard curricula so that the skills and knowledge that would be required for a smooth transition to school are never far away. This will mean keeping a record of the children’s progress against the local New Jersey requirements, as well as the UK National Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate.

The ideal tutor will be able to offer support in as many as possible of the languages the children have studied, as well as perhaps others that they have not yet considered. The tutor will be creative and able to develop fun ways to teach Maths and Science. The children especially love science experiments and learning about animals, and it is possible that a small science laboratory might be built at the family home. The children enjoy spelling and writing stories, so the tutor should find opportunities for weaving these into a well thought out course of study.

The children’s parents consider discipline important. The tutor should expect the children to be respectful and attentive to their studies, and will be supported by the parents should the need arise.

The children are all excited about their new tutor. They will respond best to a bright and able teacher, someone with a wide range of interests that overlap with theirs. The tutor should enjoy participating in sports, be fit, and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Hours and Travel

The tutoring hours will average 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, from 11am to 6pm. The tutor will need to do preparation, assessment and record-keeping in addition to these hours.

It is not known at this stage exactly how the time will be split among the children. They currently attend a morning music school, three times a week, and do sports three of four times a week, in the afternoon. The tutor will need to adapt plans to fit with these commitments.

The tutor should expect frequent travel to a wide variety of destinations - often this will be at short notice. When the family travel, it may not be possible for the tutor to have standard weekends off, and the tutor will need to be flexible in this regard. The tutor’s full expenses when travelling with the family will be met by the client.

Other Factors

Accommodation - The client will provide furnished accommodation, for the tutor throughout the term of their contract. In New Jersey, there is a three-bedroom house near the family home, (which is suitable for a couple). Occasionally the tutor should expect this house to be shared with other members of the family’s staff.

Cultural diversity - The family have a culturally diverse background and the children are being raised to appreciate these cultural values. The ideal tutor will also come from a culturally diverse upbringing and therefore understand, at a personal level, the role that self-image plays within this.

Confidentiality - The tutor is reminded that the highest levels of confidentiality will be expected of them throughout this assignment.

Remuneration - To reflect the extensive range of skills and abilities of the ideal tutor, the longer than standard hours, and the frequent and often short-notice travel, the annual fees for the position have been set at £63,000 per annum.
