Students
The eldest girl is passionate about horses and riding, and this dominates her life - it would be no exaggeration that she feels that everything else just gets in the way of her equestrian interests! She is an intelligent girl, complex and sensitive, but can feel overwhelmed when faced with large tasks, and will tend to put off starting into these assignments. The tutor will need to help her break these larger tasks down, and plan how to tackle them effectively.
The boy is intelligent and enjoys school and has been doing well across all subject areas. Unfortunately, this year, his teacher has not been as inspiring as those in the past and this has detrimentally affected his enthusiasm.
The youngest girl has shown some learning differences - these include a mixture of ADD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. So far, with the individual support she has received at school, these differences have not affected her progress.
(The family has another son aged 15. He already has his own tutor and is presently working towards his GCSEs in Paris)
Role of the Tutor
The ideal tutor will have experience working with children of different age ranges and different needs. The tutor will work with the children while they are doing their homework, support them with anything missed at school, and also help develop those qualities the children need to become independent learners.
Although the eldest boy will continue to work almost exclusively with his existing tutor, from time to time during the school year, and especially during vacations, it is expected that the two tutors may exchange roles. It would therefore be advantageous if the tutor for the younger children can also support some GCSE and A-level subjects.
Hours, Holidays and Travel
The children do their homework from 4pm-7pm each school night. It is not known at this stage what the hours will be during the school day, or on which days. It is expected that the tutor will remain flexible in this respect.
The tutor is entitled to 9 weeks paid vacation per annum. It is likely that the tutor will take their vacation time during the school holiday periods, but will rejoin the family in August. The tutor may take up to 2-3 weeks vacation during the Christmas-New Year period but there is no Easter break. The remaining vacation allowance will be taken during the early part of the summer. Again, flexibility over vacation times is expected.
Travel is part of the job. The family will cover travel expenses when the tutor accompanies them to Saudi Arabia, UK, France or other holiday destinations. The family remains in Riyadh for most of the year, (though the eldest boy is in Paris during school terms.) In July-August the family spends holidays in Paris, London or near Geneva. Trips further afield are also possible.
When the tutor is in Saudi Arabia, the client will usually make travel arrangements through their private office. However, there may be times when the tutor will be required to make his or her own travel arrangements.
Other Aspects
Car - A car will be provided for the tutor - the tutor must have a clean driving licence. In Saudi Arabia, a driver will be provided for a female tutor - occasionally the driver may have other errands, and again some flexibility is expected. The client will meet all fuel costs, except those associated with the tutors personal use.
Attributes - This position will suit a mature, polite tutor who is flexible and patient. Ability to adapt to a strict Islamic culture and society is needed for the longer-term candidate. Though the position would be suitable for a male or female tutor, any female tutor would need to be well-informed about, or experienced in, living in a strict Muslim country.
Reporting - The tutor will be required to write a monthly report for the parents on the progress of the children. If there are any impending problems or issues they should be brought up as soon as they arise, rather than waiting until the monthly report is due.
Senior Tutor - The family has had a tutor from Tutors International for last four years. This tutor will be an excellent source of information and guidance about living in the region. The existing tutor will effectively take the role of Senior Tutor, and will able to offer the new tutor advice regarding all the children.
