The Students
One of the students is a 15 year old girl from a Philippine family, with Tagalog as her first language. Originally educated in a local Italian school, she has been working with two full-time tutors since September 2020 and will be sitting her (I)GCSE exams in summer 2022. She then plans to complete her A-levels with the aspiration to attend university to study architecture.
The student is a very smart girl who enjoys the complications of difficult topics and the satisfaction of overcoming them. She is a natural introvert, coming from a close-knit family. She enjoys playing the piano, attends an oil painting class, loves to ski, and enjoys yoga although these have been limited more recently by COVID. One of the roles of the Tutor is help her become more gregarious and to expand her range of extra-curricular activities.
This summer she will be taking (I)GCSE exams in English (language and literature), maths, physics, chemistry, biology, art, geography, history, Italian, and music. This is by no means fixed at this stage.
Her most significant weakness is her English which while greatly improved is still not at a high enough level for her to display her abilities properly at A-level. She continues to be a reluctant reader.
The young lady's favourite teachers explain themselves thoroughly and teach by showing and encouraging students to try. Teachers who do not listen and who teach by demonstration alone will very soon lose her interest. She prefers teachers whose own ability is tangible and who expect the best from their students at all times. She enjoys a firm but not overly strict learning style. Lessons should be fun while also being infused with kindness and humour. She is a serious student who is happy to work hard to achieve her goals. For a knowledgeable and ambitious educator who can engage her, she will be a pleasure to have as a student.
The other student is the Client’s wife who currently speaks no Italian at all. She is now going to spend a lot of time in Italy and would like to become competent with the language for everyday usage.
Role of the Tutor
The Tutor must be a native or fluent Italian speaker with a strong musical background. Initially, this role will entail being responsible for the planning and delivery of the Italian and music GCSE syllabus ready for the exams in June 2022. There is some question as to whether she will be ready to sit the music GCSE this coming summer, and the Tutor will need to assess her and advise accordingly. The Tutor will therefore need to be confident about hitting the ground running in the middle of an exam course.
Following the GCSE exams, the Tutor will need to prepare the student for Italian A level, and both deepen and broaden her musical ability, perhaps introducing another instrument. As a typical third culture child, she would also benefit immensely from a Tutor who is able to engage her deeply with Italian culture, including music, opera, trips to La Scala, cooking, History etc.
The client’s wife has also expressed an interest in learning Italian and several weekly sessions may also be included in the Tutor’s timetable.
The Tutor must be organised, self-reliant, and independent. They should be eloquent, able to explain concepts simply, and to inspire with their enthusiasm for any given subject. He or she should be a natural communicator with a kind and caring disposition, and a firm-but-fair approach to their work. The Tutor should be creative and resourceful and full of ideas.
It is not expected that this role should be confined to the classroom. Milan has a wealth of resources and the role need not be confined to Milan or indeed to Italy. The Tutor should expect to enhance the learning through all the resources at their disposal to create a truly superb educational experience for the student.
Hours, Holidays, Accommodation & Travel
The Tutor will typically work with the student for up to an average of 30-40 hours contact time per week with preparation in addition. The exact schedule is not known at this stage, and the Tutor should be flexible about this and mindful that the role involves another two Tutors as well.
The standard minimum 9 weeks (45 working days) of paid vacation allowance applies to this contract, with these breaks being taken at times convenient to the Client.
Any untaken vacation allowance or untaken weekend days that have accrued will be compensated by payment in lieu of a pro-rated day rate.
In addition to the tutoring fees, the Tutor will be given a stipend of €3000 per month and will make accommodation arrangements themselves in Milan. The stipend is sufficient to cover rent and all other bills on the Tutor’s accommodation. The Client is not responsible for the Tutor’s personal phone bills.
A car will be made available for the Tutor if required in order to carry out their duties, but it is not anticipated that this will be necessary in Milan, as there is a good public transport network and accommodation will be near the Tutoring location.
Miscellaneous
The successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position, such as different musical instruments, sports and/or painting. He or she must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. He or she will not only be an excellent educator, but also a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.
The Tutor must be a fit and healthy non-smoker, hopefully able to instruct or join in with the array of sports enjoyed by the children.
