Paris (PAR 0624)
This position is not currently available.
A short-term, highly skilled tutor is sought to provide intensive French language and general educational support over the summer holiday, starting mid-July to August 1st at the latest, and continuing through the summer. Tutoring is for three boys aged 7, 8 and 14. The initial weeks will be spent in Paris, with planned travel to other destinations including Qatar and Dubai. The tutor must be adaptable and willing to travel with the family, providing consistent educational engagement across various locations.

Students

The youngest boy will be starting 2nd grade in September, and is currently attending an International School. The educational goal is to transition him to an American high school, with the long-term aim of preparing him for an American university, either in the US or Europe. The student is quite behind in his reading skills compared to his peers in the American and British school systems. He struggles significantly with phonics and is still at the stage of sounding out words, indicating a need for intensive phonics instruction. His dual language learning (French and English) might be contributing to his difficulties. The young man is a very kind, warm, and affectionate child, who is particularly close to his mother. His preferred learning style involves fun and games, making it essential for the Tutor to blend educational content with engaging, playful activities.

The middle brother will be entering 3rd grade from September. He faces considerable challenges with reading and mathematics. He is much further behind in reading than his age group and struggles with basic arithmetic operations. Specific difficulties include reversing characters (b and d), adding extraneous letters (e.g., adding the letter L), and not finishing words properly (e.g., words ending in -ed). These issues, combined with his concurrent learning of French, complicate his academic progress. His favorite subject is mathematics, although he finds it challenging. He enjoys playing math-related card games, which reveal his struggles with addition and subtraction. For instance, he had trouble with basic addition and subtraction problems involving multiple digits. The young man also enjoys football and other physical activities, suggesting that incorporating sports and active learning techniques could be beneficial for him.

The eldest boy, who is entering 9th grade, has significant academic deficiencies, particularly in mathematics. He struggles with fundamental concepts such as place value and basic arithmetic operations, which severely impact his performance across subjects, especially in sciences. He has not had a consistent and thorough grounding in key mathematical operations, evident from his difficulty with problems like 2+4+8 and 9+3+1. Despite these challenges, the young man has a keen interest in economics and politics, influenced by his grandfather. His grandfather is his favourite teacher, known for his patience, kindness, and insightful discussions on societal issues. The young man's least favourite teacher, his 6th grade French teacher, was described as unfair and harsh, grading students based on personal preferences rather than merit. He is a lovely and observant child who requires a patient and understanding Tutor to help him overcome his academic hurdles and build a solid foundation in mathematics and other core subjects.

Role of the Tutor

The Tutor will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive educational support tailored to the needs of each child. This includes intensive French language instruction, leveraging immersive and engaging methods to enhance the children's language skills. The Tutor will need to create a learning environment that blends educational content with fun, engaging activities, especially for the younger children who thrive on interactive and playful learning experiences.

In addition to language instruction, the Tutor will address the significant gaps in reading and mathematics for the two younger brothers. This will involve implementing innovative, game-based learning strategies to make these subjects accessible and enjoyable. The Tutor will need to be patient and creative, finding ways to make learning feel like a natural part of their daily routine, whether in a structured or informal setting.

For the eldest sibling, the focus will be on intensive support in mathematics and other core subjects to help him build a solid academic foundation. The Tutor will need to employ structured, intensive teaching methods to address his academic deficiencies, particularly in math. Given his interest in economics and politics, the Tutor can also incorporate discussions and projects related to these fields to keep him engaged and motivated.

The Tutor must be highly adaptable and capable of teaching in various environments, as the role requires travel with the family to locations such as Paris, Qatar, and Dubai. This flexibility extends to adjusting teaching methods to suit different settings, from a studio apartment in Paris to accommodations in other countries. The ability to create a consistent and stimulating educational experience across these diverse environments is essential.

Physical activities and sports will be an integral part of the learning process, especially for the middle brother, who enjoys football. The Tutor should be sporty and able to engage the children in various physical activities, incorporating these into their overall learning experience. This approach will help balance their academic work with physical exercise, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

Cultural immersion and leveraging travel experiences for educational purposes will also be a key aspect of the Tutor’s role. By utilizing the family’s travel schedule, the Tutor can provide culturally rich and educational experiences that enhance the children’s global awareness and understanding.

Overall, the Tutor must be fluent in French and preferably have experience in the American educational system and familiar with all high school subjects. The Tutor should be ready to offer substantial support and adjust their approach based on each child's evolving academic and personal development needs. This role demands a combination of professional expertise, creativity, and a nurturing attitude to support the children’s academic growth and well-being.

In addition to the summer job, there is an opportunity for a long-term position based in Djibouti, starting around September 1st. This role involves providing ongoing academic support for the three children. Candidates interested in the long-term position are encouraged to apply for both jobs, ensuring continuity and consistency in the children’s education.

Hours, Holidays, Accommodation & Travel

The Tutor will engage in a standard 40-hour workweek, though the exact distribution of these hours will need to accommodate the family’s extensive travel and activity schedule. The Tutor must demonstrate flexibility to adapt their working hours to the varying daily rhythms dictated by the family's travel and educational activities. This may include providing education in a variety of settings and times, depending on travel schedules and the locations the family visits.

The Tutor will be entitled to two consecutive days off per week, normally at the weekend, but it is essential that they understand the need to be flexible regarding the family’s travel plans and other commitments. Due to the short-term nature of this contract, there will be no holiday allowance accrued.

The Client will provide accommodation in the form of a studio apartment in Paris during the initial phase of the role. In subsequent locations such as Qatar and Dubai, suitable accommodations will be arranged by the Client. The Tutor will also have all travel expenses covered by the Client, ensuring ease of movement between different teaching environments.

Miscellaneous

The successful candidates will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position and must have been raised in a socially appropriate background. They will not only be excellent practitioners, but also good role models: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values.

The Tutors must be a fit, healthy and a non-smoker – active and energetic with a love for the outdoors; the kind of person who always makes the most of their environment to enhance teaching and learning opportunities.
